Now all they have to do is make it so that it doesn't bind it to your Steam account and so that it doesn't automatically update itself through Steam.

Grml... as a german gamer i can only say: IF YOU DARE TO CUT THE SHIT OUT OF THIS GAME AS WELL... i am done with you.

Damn german version of Fallout 3 was mutilated on steam... and it was MANDATORY (plus some false advertising)

The only thing I don't like about this is that Steam is absolutely required. GFWL never was. With Fallout 3, I never logged into GFWL even once until the DLC was released. Then I logged in to buy the DLC, then logged out. I didn't even have to log back in to run the DLC, all you have to do is move the data files to the Fallout directory and you are good to go. Can't do that with Steam, you absolutely HAVE to have it. Still, it's not a very obtrusive form of DRM, and at least there are no limited activations or continual online requirements.

If that guarantees that the damn thing will have updates more often and will crash less, I'm all for it.
But it probably doesn't.
Still, achievements support - good enough.
It will auto update when there is an update available. Also the crashing wasn't because of GFWL, it was caused by the various, plentiful glitches in the game engine. New Vegas should not crash as much as Fallout 3 though even though it uses the same engine. They tweaked it and fixed most of the bugs.

anc[is]I dunno about this... Fallout 3's patched F***ed more than they fixed, and steam forces autopatching...
It doesn't force autopatch you can turn it off really easy.
