Can somebody help, I am totally confused with the whole companion thing, can you hire all of them or only a certain amount, can you leave them somewhere and go off on your own, please help

Looking it up, I think it's similar to Fallout 3. You can dismiss a compainion, but this time they will go wait at your house until you need them again rather then heading to a location on the map. Make sure you don't leave any food nearby though, they will eat it apprently...
