Ok, I've just downloaded the Fallout collection from steam and have been advised to download various patches... I have no idea how I am supposed to actually implement them though, I'm not too computer savvy and have not really dealt with games downloaded via steam before.

Help!

Get WinRAR online.
Open files with WinRAR.
Highlight files.
Hit Control C
Open My computer
Open C drive
Open Program Files
Open Bethesda folder
Open Fallout 3 folder
Open Data Files
Hit control V
Close all windows
Start FO3 launcher
Click Data files
Enable mods.

Play

Or google "How do you install Fallout 3 mods" or something similar to that. itss pretty easy and the directions are simple to learn.

Same process, just substitute "Open Bethesda folder" with the correct developer name folder.

Steam usually sets everything up for you already but it doesn't hurt to get the unofficial patches as well.

Just go to NMA [http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/dload.php] and get the stuff you need. Just read the readme files included and you should do fine. The readme files are also shown before you download the files so you can read them and see what they do.

Installation is usually done by just unzipping the patch into the game folder.

Open the files and run the .exe inside them.

You can download Winrar here [www.rarlab.com]. Then, when you download the rar- or zip-files you just have to extract them into the folders where you installed the games. Again, read the readme files as some patches may differ.

edit: how can turn into www.escapistmagazine.com/rarlab.com? That's certainly special.

Oh, it's easy.

Open the file under All Programs that you installed the Trilogy to. (Should be "Interplay")

Select the game you want to patch. Right-click. Open file location. Copy the address from the page that opens up.

Run mod installers. Paste the address into the install location bar. Install.

Rejoice!

[sub]Disclaimer: I've only done this with killap's patch and his Restoration mod, but it should work with others. In theory.[/sub]

Escapist forums is messing with me, I think. www.rarlab.com is the correct url.
Ok, I think I may have done it, but to be honest I don't think I'll be able to tell if I have or not.

Do what? Installed winrar? Patched the game? Talk to me, dude.
i used winRAR to extract the files to the backup version of the fallout games because that seems to be the only place where i can find the files.

Just an aside, but I'd take 7-Zip over WinRAR. 7z doesn't nag you and it has more compatible file formats. Plus, it's open-source.
