Fallout tips?

I was going to get Fallout 1, 2, and Tactics off of Steam, but I've never touched these games before. I really have no idea where I'm supposed to even start, so I was wondering if anyone has any general tips for stats, perks, quests or whatever.

Also, how long should I expect to lock myself in my room with these three games?

A long time if you want to experience everything. Kick your mindset of the fallout 3 shooter/ VATS whatever at the door if you have played fallout 3.

Read the wiki. Most perks or builds seem to work well together but don't for some reason. Check the wiki before you do anything.
