You are all wrong! It was a plot by Brainiac!
I honestly have no freaking clue, but I have to agree with canadamus_prime

I don't think it's really relevant to the story who fired first. The point was there was a nuclear war that resulted in a wasteland.
Even if this kind of shit happened in real life, I think the whole focus would very quickly shift from the classic Han/Griedo argument to "how the hell do we survive now?"

I think that the Enclave and/or Vault-Tec set off a nuclear device, probably in America, to trigger the war. They are both evil enough to do it. If it was actually done by a country, then why? The Enclave and Vault-Tec both had motive, no matter how stupid it would be.

In all honesty, I think it actually might have been neither who fired first, but a more global conspiracy, made by none other than Vault-tec. Since they had all this power, making all these underground bases to do experiments on humans, it would only make sense that they would WANT a nuclear war so they can start their mission.

Think about it: The G.E.C.K. super mutants, attempted human control, cloning, inbreeding. All different experiments. Yet at the main Vault tec vault, it could all be monitored, so that they could find the info they needed for literally hundreds of years. Sure it meant billions would die, but hey, when did a greedy, power hungry corporation care about any collateral damage.

Think on that.

In the series of Fallout games, the whole planet was reduced to ashes within 2 hours of nuclear war. It is unknown who initiated it and who fired the first H-bomb.

So who did it? Make some suggestions.
There is a recording in the game that actually says the Chinese have fired their nukes, its a recording you need to get the MIRV. It is a very sad recording though

Ron Perlman actually says in the Fallout 2 intro: "The end of the world occured pretty much as we had predicted. Too many humans, not enough space or resources to go around. The details are trivial and pointless, the reasons as always purely human ones."

It is implied in Fallout 2 that it could well have been America that did it, as a way to kick the dog. Only the dog kicked back. As Sak Sak points out, it is part of the philosophical theme behind the Fallout games too. Does it really matter who initiated the destruction of the world if everyone happily contributed to it?

Perhaps the biggest theme in Fallout is that "War is Hell" and just about every quest in the first two games has a peaceful negotiating solution as the "best" option. Well, apart from the total destruction of the Enclave and the Master/Super Mutant Army, but that is probably a case of "Sometimes you must take action" because the result if you didn't exercise violence (or awesome diplomatic skills in the case of the Master) would be far far worse.

back to the Main topic wasn't no one fired first. But the war was so hyped up that they BOTH fired at the same time in a small 2 hour period..............

At least you had the decency not to leave a grenade in my pocket. Wait, what the hell is this?!?
That would be your complementary iron.

[sup]Seriously, what are those things for in the Fallout world? Doorstops?[/sup]

Other than ammo for the Rock-it launcher, it would be nice if you could use an iron as a weapon should all your other ones break.

A dual iron wielding wastelander could in theory, be a very dangerous thing.

They'd kill you and press your shirts all at the same time.

And I'm sure that the hard metal surface could be used to fashion a fine suit of armour. I think we've stumbled upon an unused goldmine of iron-related item possibilities.

Personally I think Joshua [http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0106830/] did it :)

Seriously thought as pointed it out does it really matter who shot first? In essence the situation comes from MAD [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_assured_destruction] and the fact that if one fires, we all fire and live with the consequences.

Excellent! Now all these irons I keep finding in my pockets have purpose. I've been building a Nuka Cola monument with them (harder than it sounds), but I'll get onto smelting them down ASAP.
