so me and a friend got in to a discussion about how on the internet you cant be famous because not enough people would have heard of you and you would just be popular and forgotten when you stopped doing your thing, I disagreed with that and he asked me to name some people who are truly famous on the internet to my surprise I could only name a few, so that got me thinking who is famous on the internet and how do you describe someone on the internet as famous.
post below who you think is famous and how can people be famous on the net if they can at all

It's hard to have more than 15 seconds of fame on the internet. It changes so quickly that the spotlight is always shifting. You could say Antoine Dodson is an internet celebrity, but that is false. He used the internet to become famous, yes, but he is famous in real life, too.

Well, I suppose that works as an example. He is quite the celebrity. But like you said, it's hard to name more than just a few.

I believe there are quite a few 'classic' internet celebrities, such as the chocolate rain guy, and the 'Charlie bit me' kids. Viral videos don't really showcase 'quality' though...

hmm....i hadn't really thought of viral videos until now but i don't think i would count them just because it just one video and you don't really know the people in most of them

Those people on Youtube that make a shitload of money by doing those pointless vlog things.
Doug Walker, James Rolfe, Ben Croshaw and others actually deserve their fame in my opinion, but different strokes for different folks I guess.

i would like to point out everyone who works with James and Doug (manly Doug as I think James only has one person always helping/posting on his site him) and most of the people who make content here also deserve much more fame then the vlogers....grr

I would assume that to be "famous" from the internet, one could have heard of--or seen these people--outside of the internet. I think all of these people apply.

Brandon Hardesty has launched a beginning movie career from his Youtube days (artietsmitw), after Geico used one of his videos for a commercial. I think the 3rd movie he's been in comes out this year.

The "=3" guy on Youtube is also selling shirts in stores, which means that culture at least acknowledges him.

As noted, Doug Walker--The Nostalgia Critic--from thatguywiththeglasses/chanel Awesome (and a few of his crew: Spoony, Angry Joe, Linkara) are getting recognized and cos-played at events. Their site is popular enough to have raised around 90K in the past two Christmas seasons for the Ronald McDonald House. Back to Spoony--Noah Antweiler--he won last years Mashable/Webby (not sure which), which speaks magnitudes for being seen, though the internet doesn't work like a lot of otehr places when it comes to voting, polls, and popularity.

The Roosterteeth crew has also moved from the internet into a larger conciousness.

Also, James Rolffe (as mentioned, the Angry Video Game Nerd) has been asked to provide commentary for the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street movies, which are outside the realm of the internet.

Liam Sullivan (from the "Kelly" vidoes) is also now semi-famous, having appeared on several shows/tie-ins.

Nathan Barnatt (Talking Classics on Screwattack) is also an often used actor for commercials.

Others have been mentioned, but this is my list. Whiel they're not all "famous" in the traditional sense, they are all now rather "successful," and have bridged the gap from internet to reality, or internet to other medias.

As for people on this site, Bob Chipman is a name recognized by some who I talk to, known here as Movie Bob, and as the Game Overthinker on Screwattack, as well as his own site.

Yahtzee is also well known for his scathing reviews.

I also recognized Lisa Foiles from Angry Joe, and recognition is a sort of fame.

These are, at least by my opinion, people who have either become known on the internet, or known outside of it for more than just being part of a "viral video."

Famous or not, they are doing well.

Ryan Higa and Shane Dawson are pretty big. Higa has the highest number of subscribers on youtube, and despite the short attention span of the internet, his two debuted short films have gotten more than a million views each. Ryan has also appeared in a feature film. Even if it was absolutely terrible, that's still something pretty substantial.

I want to say the LRR crew are famous, but I can't ever think of a time where I've heard them named dropped IRL or on any website aside from the Escapist even though I see people show their videos all the time. They're still waiting for the big event that shoots their actual names to fame instead of just being 'those Canadians that made that hilarious video' or 'those Canadians that donated to that charity'.

DerrickComedy is big. They only have a handful of sketches on the the internet, but they all have a ridiculous number of views. They also had their own feature film, and while it wasn't amazing, it was a lot better than the Ryan and Sean movie at least. Quite a few genuine laughs.

Others that I wanted to cite have already been named. So yeah, it's possible to get famous on the internet, it just hasn't been fully capitalized on just yet. Internet content continues to get more and more popular and professional, so I think we'll see a lot of people who become famous without having to leave their medium of distribution in the future.

I think the Gamer/ Dork culture is most prominent on the Internet, and many Internet celebrities are therefore a part of it. Game critics like Yahtzee or Spoony might be more famous if gamers had a reason to congregate in public. Besides E3.
