Fan-Made Half-Life HD Remake Ain't Dead Yet

The Black Mesa project proves it isn't vaporware with new screenshots.

This year's E3 may not have had any news about Half-Life 3, but fans can take heart that there's at least one HL-related project still in the works. Black Mesa, the ambitious fan project recreating the original Half-Life in Half-Life 2's Source engine, released several new screenshots after starting up a new social media campaign on their Facebook page.

For those who may not have heard of Black Mesa, the fan project was first announced way back in 2005, and has been in development ever since. The last big release of info for the fan-project was a promising trailer [http://youtu.be/G32_q_3es8E] released in 2008, hinting at a 2009 release, but as the year came and went with no game and limited updates to their website, many began to doubt the mod was ever going to see the light of day.

The latest screenshots don't reveal too much, but shows that the team has been doing a very nifty job giving everyone's favorite secret research facility a more modern look. The fact that team released a host of new screenshots as part of a new social media campaign also hints that maybe, just maybe, there'll be a final release date announced for the mod here soon.

I'm kinda depressed that there aren't any Xen screens yet. Still, if this is what the rest of the game will look like, then I don't think Xen will be a disappointment in the eye-candy department.

Even so, it looks like the mod is almost finished, judging by the variety of finished environments from which to take screenshots. I don't think the mod will take much longer at this rate.

From the looks of things it's still in mid-early late alpha. fat chance we'll here of a release date (that they can live-up to) but at least it's some progress even if it's chipping away at the wall with a spoon.

Care to explain where you got this power of deciphering a game's stage of progress based only on a set of screenshots?

Mid-early late alpha. I'm sorry but I chuckled a bit after reading that... and I seriously don't know why.

On topic: looks nice. Let them take their time. :)

I'm really looking forward to this. I loved HL2, but the original won't run on my Mac, so if this mod is compatible it'll be a great chance to experience the magic.

MAN that looks sweet. Judging from a couple of those shots, they've upgraded to the 2011 engine with the new lighting effects. Maybe that's what's been keeping them all this time.

This looks nice, but I'm a bit disappointed. When they said new media was coming, I was really hoping it'd include some voice acting. The guy they've got playing Barney is stellar, sounds just like the real thing!

P.S. Thanks

Nice screenshots but I've been disappointed too often now. I'll get excited about this again when I'm downloading it and not earlier.

Considering the attitude of pretty much everyone involved in that project, I can say that I almost don't care. Sure I'd love another excuse to go through Black Mesa and get frustrated on Xen and restart the game, but I can still do that on the original Half-Life.

Insert one-liner here.

I wonder if they remembered to take into account the broken physics of the original game...

Either way, should it come out id like to give the refurbished ancient FPS another whirl.

Well, Xen was and still is not the most fondly remembered level of Half-Life. So im not exactly doomsaying over that.
