What is fanboyism? Regular forum might recognise it as the irrational support of one console over the other, trolling and flame wars.

And that's just from games, fans have typically existed for years over different things, sports, Pepsi vs Coke, Mac vs PC, relatively harmless things, until football fans decide to start beating people up.

Recently I've noticed a trend after the US elections. Political fans, while democracy in theory is a good idea, there are some sorts of people (on both sides) who apparently have no idea of the big picture, people who hold on to a single debatable point as support for a party candidate (he's cutting taxes, so I'm in).

Next we have religious fans, people who subvert the 'good' things in a religion and end up sounding like irrational nuts. (Personal opinion, I believe it is possible for a rational person to use religion as a social network, for a peace of mind and self reflection)

Here's one "U2 is a Christian Band.", ok this might or might not be true, but in no way does this statement support your beliefs, even if 99% of the world believe in something, it doesn't mean it's true (see: flat earth). It's basically a general statement like saying Xbox is better than the PS3.(Whats better? the price point, the games?)

So anyway, your thoughts, do you think fanboyism has invaded otherwise reputable institutions?

Yes it did. I am probably best thing a fanboy can be: strictly defensive one. And i praise only best of the best in terms of quality. For a total opposite, look at console wars. Or large part of a Warhammer fandom. Just... eugh.

Fanboyism is the bane of civilized conversation. I would rather contract herpes and chickenpox (gladly) on the same day rather than talk to a fanboy, who will inevitably bring up some contrived logic into his argument about why he thinks one product from a company is better than the other. Fanboyism and elitism to that extent are simply aggravating because they think (and I use the word think quite wrongly here) that they have an objective view over their statements and that their logic is infallible.

They just don't. Compounding the facts further is their inability to take a step back and look at the bigger picture, as if doing so will somehow crumble their consumer choice. It's the very definition of fanboyism.

Being a fanboy is old as the hills. As in the only time there were not fanboys in video games is when there was only one system, the Atari 2600. Then we all just loved it. It was awesome. If you did not have one you were one sad panda.

But then came the NES vs Sega days, and thus the "fanboy" was born from the flames of that conflict. Ever since then fanboys have raged over who's "whatever" was better.

What are you going to do? Why cares. Just don't feed the fanboys. Like trolls it is best to just ignore them.

See, I meant genital herpes. Genital herpes and Herpes Zoster (which you may be referring to here) are different in that the viruses that cause them are different (Herpes Simplex virus vs Herpes varicella-zoster virus).

So chicken pox is not a form of herpes, it's a form of shingles. :D

Everybody is a little bit fanboy.

But I guess some let their fanboy side take over.

I thought I was the only one...
You have great self-restraint.

I think there is a certain type of person that on some level wants to be a fanboy. Anime fans seem to be prone to this sort of thing, sports fans are pretty bad about this too.

Since i hate football above all other sports (and most things in general) i will blame it on football. Plus, football gives us guys like this.

now just imagine he's talking about the new Resident Evil.

Quoted for truth. Anime has a horrid case of the fankids, which is part of what puts me off of it. The other part is how whenever a large group of them converge, I start to pick up on the uncomfortable feeling (and smell) that I'm the only one in the group who bathes daily.

I'm guilty of fankid-ism too, though. I think everyone has something that they personally believe is so good, they would defend it to the End of the Universe. Take mine for example, 3rd Strike. I'm aware that it's not necessarily the greatest game ever made (loads of people don't even know what it is), but to hear me talk about it, you'd think I plan on marrying it sometime soon.
