I just read an article about how brand-loyalty is actually scientific in nature and that the medial prefrontal cortex acted to overrule other parts of the brain to make people like Coke more than Pepsi, even though BEFORE they knew what the drinks were they chose Pepsi as the better drink.

you think this applies to fanboys of the different consoles? i think it may. because that would explain how fanboys could make the most asinine arguments about how their console is "better" and still believe it is even after straight up facts are presented.

it would also explain why the 360 outsells the PS3 all the time even if the hardware is "superior" and it uses Blu-Ray and the games "look better". (I own 2 360s, so im no PS3 fanboy :/ these are just objective facts.)

EDIT: My bad for coming off as a PS3 fanboy or something. I prefer the 360 (its why i own 2) i just thought the hardware on the PS3 was empiracally superior (thats what ive been told for the longest time... i must be surrounded by PS3 fanboys?)

Besides that, i was posting this because i thought this was a legitimate explanation for fanboyism and wanted to see what a gaming forum thought of such an explanation. I thought the fanboyism over coke and pepsi was similar to that of 360/PS3/PC fanboys.

oh, and yeah, heres the link

I don't think any amount of 'logic' will turn rabid fanboys from opinonated morons to scientifically preferencial morons..

Hot damn, 306?
Gotta get me one of those.

Anyway, OT: I thought that, but less scientific, but I had no proof and so got laughed at.

I don't really care how scientific they say it is. The bold part though.

...No. <.< ...just no. 1. the hardware isn't "superior" it's highly specialized to handle float point math 2. blu-ray doesn't make things magically better. Movies try to sell this same point. ...It does not. 3. Hardware doesn't make the games. and the games make the console

But otherwise, I don't think it's the same. Fanboys exist for a few reasons, none of which are going to be scientifically explained away like that. They spent money on their system, so they're sticking with it, thinking they made the better choice. Also, different preferences cause different opinions, ...my opinions being infinitely better than yours, I'm right. you're not.

Also a taste test for a drink isn't going to have the same conclusions to be applied to consumer electronics. Taste changes based on mood, and it has a major physiological response. Overall I could have a preference for coke, but sometimes, I may just want a pepsi. Or even root beer. Or gravel and ketchup. :p Neat study, but overall made useless by variability. The same variability makes it unable to be applied to other studies. So while interesting, it'd just be too difficult to say really.

Yes, the hardware is better but it's still pretty close.

BluRay is a feature on it's own, he didn't say that is what makes graphics better. However, BluRay does give the option. You cannot fit a high definition movie onto a regular DVD. You can't. The new format isn't making it better, it's giving it room for higher resolution. And THAT looks WAY better. Watching a high def bluray on my 40" 1080p TV is completely mind blowing compared to watching a regular def DVD. It just is, you can't even argue it. More resolution = better visuals by default. For games, not having to swap discs is a very nice feature.

Third point is true.

Anyway, OP: Could you maybe supply a link to the article? Because your explanation isn't that great.

I don't think you can really apply it to the 360 vs PS3 war - I think there are too many other factors at play other than just 'which is statistically better.'

Well in the name of logic, which you have invoked.

What specifically makes the PS3 hardware "better". By what metric are you judging? How exactly does this tie into the PS3 being "better". Again, by what metric?

But yeah, the problem comes when people choose a side they want to agree with, and then come up with the arguments for why afterward. There's not a whole lot you can do about this though, just point out inconsistency in their argument and leave it at that. It's up to them if they want to stay ignorant.

...the fact that there were people loyal to Microsoft sickened me in the 90s. The fact that there are so many more of them today just causes me to laugh bitterly.

But you're right. Brand loyalty is simply an offshoot of pack mentality. Kinda like fashion snobbery or rampant nationalism.

**edit**
hah... 306s... if you own two Peugeots... do either still run? After all, "only ze truly wealthy can afford to own ze French car".

GamePro actually had an article on the psychology behind the console wars a few issues back. It was pretty weak. But then, I'm a pysch major and notoriously hard to please when "science" gets involved. Yahtzee hit the nail on the head. If a person (or a person's parents) only has enough money to buy one system then they will convince themselves of its superiority to justify their purchase.

OK, some clarification is necessary. As far as simulation goes, the PS3 looks better, largely due to better lighting. On the other hand, when it comes to fast action, the 360 looks better because it can handle more polygons at a higher framerate, but everything will still have an uncanny valley effect.

If you don't care about graphics as much as you do performance, then the PS3 isn't any better, and if the game you're playing is fast paced you won't notice the graphics.

Nah, not really, the PS2 raped almost everything in its time, if that were the case then there would have been enough PS3 fanboys to outsell both Wii and X360.

Why do we feel we have to explain humanity's every little neurosis? Why can't we just call rabid fans idiots and be done with it?

as someone who only has an Xbox I can say without a doubt that some people can be quite offensive, I got it for the games, I dont care much past that... people have actually made passes about my intelligence for not owning a PS3 for some strange reason.... and now you've explained it I think it makes it worse.

I love PC gaming. I can game and much more unlike consoles. The problem with consoles are cost. Why should I buy a PS3 when it cost so much and I have my PC. I won't even get PS3 only games. Thats more likely to happen on the Xbox 360.

From the looks the PS3 is better then the Xbox 360 but the 360 gets more 360 only games because Mircosoft are jerks. Paying for Xbox live shit repaying for my internet no thanks. Thats my opinion sure other people can have different ones. So many factors come in.
