I'm curious to know how Danny DeVito feels knowing his fans think he's the best casting choice to repeatedly say "Pikachu!" over and over again.

Yes! Also, at some point, he needs to go under cover in a hospital as a doctor. Dr. Toboggan. Mantis Toboggan!

Is there something I'm missing? Why is Danny Devito a "perfect" fit for Pikachu? It's a yellow rodent who says one fucking word. Did he actually develop linguistic skills at some point in the plethora of Pokemon stuff out there? I just...I don't get it.
Well yeah that's a main point that Detective pikachu can talk but can't use any attack moves just like Meowth of Team Rocket fame. This Pikachu also hasva much deeper voice than you would expect a pikachu to have.

So basically yes people do want this because it would be funny and be a "perfect fit" for what's been described as a hardboiled detective type

If they can't afford Devito, I'd settle for Robert Costanzo.

EDIT: He voiced Detective Harvey Bullock in the Batman Animated Series

Or Gilbert Gottfried <_<
Gilbert Gottfried got fired from AFLAC after making terrible/offensive jokes about the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011. I highly doubt Nintendo would hire him to do voice overs.

Talking Pokemon have been a thing ever since Team Rocket in the TV series (they're beyond rare but hardly unheard of), and it's not like there's only one of the rats in the entire world of Pokemon, much less one who spontaneously learned how to talk.

Sorry, but you don't have to be a Poke-geek to know that.

Eh. I can't see it. Maybe if pikachu still looked like its Red/Blue sprite I'd understand.

I'd prefer Tim Curry, Or John Cleese.

I'm in. 37,090.

I like this aspect of fandoms. Silly fun with the opportunity for hilarity.

That's a dumb choice.

They get James McCaffrey instead.
I'm so on board with that. A serious, hard-boiled detective voice that sounds like it's straight out of Sin City would be a great juxtaposition with Pikachu's family-friendly appearance. One of the down sides to watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is that I cannot divorce the identity of Danny DeVito from Frank Reynolds, I sometimes even catch myself referring to Danny as Frank in his other works.

Actually wait, this could work...

Sorry but there are people in this world who don't know anything about Pokemon. I find it funny that you seem to think the only two types of people in the world are :
1. Poke-geeks
2. People who know stuff about Pokemon

TR Meowth and Mewtwo are the only ones that spring to mind. In the main games, its limited to Pokemon that can imitate human speech, and a lone Zoroark that can speak.

I had to google talking pokemon from the games, and I've not stopped playing them since R&B, save skipping over the original GEN 3. Most people haven't watched the anime since they were very young, and even then, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that remembers anyone other than Meowth talking, I certainly don't.

So yeah, I'd say you do have to be a poke-geek to know that, this coming from someone who takes the main series games way too seriously.

Define "know stuff". I don't want to be rude, but... you really WOULD have to know absolutely nothing about Pokemon to wonder why there's a game where "THE" Pikachu (as if there's only one in the universe) suddenly knows how to talk.

Look, I don't mean to give you grief for not knowing anything about a piece of fiction, but you obviously have at least enough of a passing interest in this news to comment.

Well, yeah. Hence why I said "beyond rare but not unheard of". And I don't see why you'd have to know about more than TR"s Meowth to not be completely baffled by a talking Pikachu, especially since (like I already said) it's not like the mascot is the only one in the game's universe.

There was also Lapras from the Santa episode and Slowking from Pokemon 2000. EDIT: Oh! And Entei from Pokemon 3: The Movie.

I would also say that the general public would be more aware of the Pokemon anime than the games, since I think that more people would say that Pokemon say their own name rather than sound like a broken fax machine.

OT: Detective Pikachu, what? This game actually looks kind of awesome. I don't really care who voices the character as long as they don't suck too bad. I'd much rather the option to play with the Japanese audio with English subtitles. Where's the petition for that?

Well let's see, I've never watched an episode of the show, I've never read the manga (I'm assuming there is one), I've never played the card game, or any video games, and I've never had a conversation with anyone in depth about the Pokemon thing at all. In fact, the only context of Pokemon I have, is pop culture callbacks to it, from things like Robot Chicken, and people just randomly spouting out "Pika!" whenever someone mentions Pikachu's name, almost like a Pavlovian Response. And on the subject of Pikachu talking, the ONLY THING anyone ever says, when you mention his fucking name is, in an annoyingly high pitched voice "PIKA!! PIKA PIKA! PIKACHUUUU!" So why in the hell, would I think he is capable of actually speaking, when the only thing anyone has ever indicated he's capable of saying, is his own damn name? Nobody quotes catchy lines that he says like "It's clobberin' time!" Or "I am Justice, I am the Night! I...AM...BATMAN!!" It's just "PIKA PIKA!!" And in fact, the only other Pokemon I know by name is Squirtle, who also, is only ever depicted as saying his name. If you establish in your story, that the things can only say their own damn names, which seems to be all anyone ever has them say when they are quoting them, why should I think they are capable of anything else?

So yeah there are people who know nothing about this thing. This might seem surprising to you, but I find it surprising that this thing is even remotely popular, given how stupid it is. Nerddom isn't universal. Just because you geek out over something, doesn't mean everyone else gives a shit about that thing.
