Let me dispel this sentiment that I have been hearing that this a kids movie and therefore it must be bad. This movie can be enjoyed by all ages, and by adult and teens more so. So in short, go see this film, its a great all ages film. Now, onto the details and nitpicks.
The Story,It's a Roald Dahl book, so you know it's going to be whimsical, fanciful, and fun (This is the guy who wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, and Matilda) While not the most complex of story lines it is a fun ride and a joy to watch. And the subplots don't get in the way or leave you unsatisfied. The writing is pitch perfect and there are so many clever quips you almost have trouble keeping up with the clever lines, and on that note.
The voice acting, is amazing. The actors all did their part wonderfully and I never caught myself thinking of the actor (which often happens when the cast of an animated movie has blinding "star power", aka cash ins) but I thought of the characters. The delivery of the clever lines mentioned before would have fallen flat if they weren't in the hands of capable actors. One side note on the screenplay that may stick out to people while watching, all expletives are replaced with the word "Cuss". I think Dahl may have used this in his original book so his characters would talk like adults, but still be kid friendly (if this word didn't replace actual cursing this movie's rating would skyrocket). However, you get used to this pretty fast and soon enough your mind fills in the blanks anyways
And probably my favorite part of the whole movie, the visual style. This movie, is beautiful. The stop motion is smooth, the puppets and props are extraordinarily detailed, the whole style is pleasing to look at an cohesive. Although it may be a bit too orange for some people, which is by far the most prominent color in the movie. The sound design is also well executed, ambient sounds to the soundtrack (consists mainly of folk and older rock) all fit and are a treat to the ear.
So yeah, do yourself a favor, go see this movie.
Or they'll steal your cider
