I'll have to second Pedro's choice of David Eddings (oddly enough, I'd just mentioned him on the previous thread before seeing this one.) His character development is excellent. It helps that he team-writes with his wife, and she writes in all the female characters. I've enjoyed everything I've read by him, although I haven't checked out his latest series.

oh, BLESS your heart for recognizing genius when you read it!!! The Tapestries hold a special, special place in my heart (have you read Ysabel yet?? It's a freaking GIFT 20 years after the Tapestries)...but I have to say Tigana is probably the best thing Ser Kay ever wrote.

I'll also put a plug in for Elizabeth Moon's The Deed of Paksenarrion and Scott Lynch's The Gentleman Bastard Sequence.

Didn't read Ysabel, if it's half as good it'd be on my pick-up list for sure And yes Tigana was also very good, come to think of it Kay didn't write a "ton" of books but none of them are subpar imo.

Terry Pratchett is the king of Fantasy imo though Garth Nix comes in a pretty damn close second (for the Old Kingdom trilogy)

Philip Pullman for the His Dark Materials trilogy is awesome but the movie of The Golden Compass completely and utterly destroyed its credibility.
