Fantasy or Sci Fi?

I prefer fantasy, but I don't like Tolkien-styled fantasy. The Codex Alera (I really like Jim Butcher stuff, so what?) is a really good one, and I know it's very "kiddy", but I love the Redwall series.
If I'm going to read or watch sci-fi, I prefer it to be something that takes place in modern day, or something very close to it, like the movies Splice or District 9. I like it even more when it's mixed with other genres (like fantasy =D): The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan is a good one; not too sci-fi, but not too far-fetched fantasy either.

Low setting please. Both in fantasy and sci-fi.
From fantasy i prefer worlds were magic is kept to minimum and not every teen age girl can cast a fireball, mages are considered more of a myth than fact, and if one would openly practice their arts they would be deemed as an abomination. Something along the Conan's setting, WoD or Call of Cthulhu.
Same goes with sci-fi. I prefer low-tech settings like cyberpunk/steampunk (yes steampunk is sci-fi, read Jules Verne). Generally space travel still being born without trans-galactic trips, high-tech weapons as prototypes, more focused on the social aspects of humanity getting implant-crazy than fighting with aliens.

Scifi always seems to make the better story...
However when it comes to fun factor and games specifically, fantasy always wins for me.
Perfect example: Fallout 3 vs Oblivion

As far as books go, I prefer both, though not at the same time, and my mood shifts back and forth a couple times over the course of a year. Right now I'm reading fantasy, but eventually the sci-fi itch will return and I'll shift my focus back that way.
Though to be honest, a few times I thought I was "done" with fantasy, as my patience for it has been getting increasingly thin. But right now it's as strong as ever. It should be said though, that Lord of the Rings bored the shit out of me so thoroughly that I couldn't get past Tom Bombadil. I'm told it gets better, and that he's the worst part of the series, and that I could skip him entirely without missing anything, but I just can't get past it.
Video games are pretty evenly split as well.

Sci-fi, love it all the way. the series' are awesome and with stuff like Stargate SG-1 going for 10 years! series like that just don't pop up anywhere. the movies might be horrible some times, but that is what they specialize in, syfy, i'm lookin at you. plus it's always fun to watch a stupid movie just because it's so incredibly stupid, but sci-fi has got me hooked for life.
i completely agree, no offence to anyone, but sometimes fantasy movies can be just laughable to watch because they can be so corny. i'm not saying that all fantasy movies are corny, and i'm not saying that sci fi isn't without it's corny moments, it's just that sci fi knows that you don't have to take it seriously some times, where as fantasy goes for broke and ends up a B and sometimes a C movie.rockyoumonkeys said:
I've never really gotten into fantasy myself. Speaking as someone that only considers themself a "dabbler" in nerdery, then I can say that its far easier to get into sci-fi than fantasy. Firstly, probably because most fantasy is very influenced by Tolkein, very few fantasy authors seem to be able to write a book thats less than 500 pages (and are generally part of a trilogy at the very least). Furthermore, whenever I look at the back of a fantasy book and see words like "dragonmaster" or "fulfill his destiny" I feel like I'm going to be reading the cliff notes to some fat nerd's D&D campaign.

Appart from Lord of the Rings, I can't think of many fantasy books that have become "classics" in the same way that Frankenstein, Neuromancer, Dune, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, 1984 or Brave New World have become. As far as lord of the rings go's I agree, I read the first book but I can't even remember if I fully read the seocond one (thats saying somthing) Its not the ideas behined the books that are bad its just the way they are written.rockyoumonkeys said:

I love supernatural the most, so I'd have to go with fantasy. Sci-fi is good, but I hate the space wars, which is what quite a few are about. Then again I don't like the high fantasy either, since it's been done to death, but interesting characters can make up for it.
