Probably Stardock. One of the few compaines still willing to make 4x games, have no copy protection and release many expasions and patchs for all their games. Also galctic civilisations 2 and Sins of a solar empire are great fun to waste many an hour on.

Dont Get Me Wrong I Love Jade Empire, MAss Effect and Both Knights of the Old Republic games but bioware just took the exact same control interface and transfered it across 3 different games conversation menus and micro managing of equipement is all identical and dont get me started on the bad combat systems.
First, I haven't played Jade Empire, so I can't say anything about it. Second, BioWare didn't make KotOR 2, that was Obsidian. On That other stuff, that's why I like them, the dialogue gives you enough choices to say, be nice, evil, in the middle or just ask a random question. That's enough for me, I would prefer the Morrowind text tree-ish things. I personally like micro managing. And I don;t care about the combat system all that much, if I want good combat I play an FPS or Gears. I'd rather play an RPG for the story.
Combat is esential in an rpg. I'm bein critial but if there is no good combat in an rpg you may as well play a sim and read a book. I enjoy playing an rpg in which you can step into a characters shoes so when i play a solder or jedi as is the case with KotOR or Mass effect i expect to experience the life of these characters so thats character developement advancing a plot and fighting in exciting battles.

5) Phil Steinmeyer (Railroad Tycoon 2, Tropico)
4) Daniel Dumont (Patrician, Port Royale)
3) Sid Meier (Civilization, Pirates!, among countless others)
2) Brian Reynolds (Alpha Centauri, Rise of Nations)
1) Johan Andersson (the Europa Universalis series and its spinoffs)

Oh and Bethesda Talk about copy and paste.
Jade Empire: whatever its flaws, it's got the BEST. ENDING. EVER.

Buh, I don't really pay attention to who produces & who distributes & subsequently tried to hog credit for games.

BioWare.
Black Isle Studeos (gone).
Blizzard.
Bathesda Softworks.
Spicey Horse.
Gas Powered Games.
Ossian.
Obsidian.
Amaranth Games.

Eh if By twist in the middle then yes that was fairly impressive as it was in Knights of the Old Republic (something Mass effect seemed to lack) but the actual ending is fairly standard main character charges in beats half the bases occupying forces to reach his target and kills the final boss in an unspectacular boss fight.

A few would have to be Free Radical which is gone now but made the kick ass golden eye and time splitters. IOI for making the Hitman Series and Valve for their actual gamer mindset of making games. And one must not froget ID the father of all shooters.

I am pretty fond of Bioware, what with them making Neverwinter Nights, Kotor, and Mass Effect.

I have always been fond of Valve, UbiSoft, Lionhead, Bungie and Bethesda. They all make high quality, block buster games. Ok maybe UbiSoft has had a few stinkers but I like them none the less.

I Work in a shop that sells games and had a representative from EA in the other day to show me clips of the new Godfather game and Sims3. He made me think that EA have not made a single game i have rated better then average in the last few years. This sparked some debate between myself and friends over the best game making company. Personally Ive settled on Valve.

FYI, valve exist because of EA.
What? What does EA possibly have to do with Valve? Valve was created as an independent company, and their only current association with EA is that EA has been publishing xbox ports of their recent, already-completed games. EA wasn't even the first publisher that Valve worked with. I'd be pretty interested to hear your explanation for how Valve wouldn't exist without EA.

I was just read an article recently about EA and Valve being partners and how it's been going well for however long.
I just figured it had been for longer.

I didn't do the research, don't I look like a ninny!
I believe that EA acquired Valve last year, or maybe in 07. Or 06, It was fairly recent.

Actually...from what I can gather, along with a few other companies, notably Ubisoft, Valve are partners with EA...that unlike Westwood or Maxis which are wholly owned by EA, partners only really take part in certain deals, mostly to do with distribution etc.

Here's an actual article dealing more specifically with the relationship between Valve and EA:

http://www.ea.com/redesign/editorial.jsp?src=valve_071805

Really all it means is who gets to distribute games made by Valve, Vivendi being the previous company to do so.

My top four are (in no particular order of course...)

Rare, Blizzard, Valve and Square-Enix.

Simply because while these companies traditionally take longer to release games than some others, I have consistently gotten the most enjoyment and longetivity out of their games than any other developers. When it comes down to it, what more could you want?

So you just decided to say Valve exists because of EA? That's pretty hilarious. You do look a little like a ninny, I suppose. Although, I honestly have no idea what a ninny is. I'm just taking your word for it!

The truth is, EA replaced Vivendi only in 2005 to distribute Valve's games. That's all.
