I recently bought Far Cry 2 on a steam supersale.

I played the game when it first came out on PS3 and personally I loved it. It had some major flaws but it receives a lot of hate for what it was. I think that if it was modder friendly it would be 10x better with just a few simple changes.

1. Factions don?t attack you when you are working for them/shoot you on sight. If when you went to a checkpoint you showed some papers and they let you past/attacked you based on allegiance its would be a lot better. You could even use the old papers after you switch factions but before word got around you switched.
2. People stayed dead. There were day/night cycles in the game. Make cleared out checkpoints stay clear for a day or 2.
3. Fast travel. Its ironic because a lot of people don?t like fast travel in Fallouts for example and make mods taking it out. But this is a game that needs more of it. Some of those missions are just too far away. Made worse by change 2.

That?s it, beyond the end being non sequitur. I think those changes would fix everything in the game I had a problem with. Otherwise it was a great open world attack how you want game.

I find that, if I'm in a very specific mindset, I can really enjoy the game.

Its certainly a great concept, and I hope Far Cry 3 follows up on it, but its too shallow, and its frustrations too frustrating, to be a great game as it is.

I really hate some of the area design too - everything feels so cramped unless you're on the borders of the map. Its a little better in the second map though.

There has to be a happy medium, because part of it is traveling across the wilderness and fast travel negates open world. But yes, heres to Far Cry 3. where da monsters at?

I don't know. I agree with number 2, but beyond that I never really got bothered by anything. The whole game bored me at the beginning, but then I learned there was a story and I started playing again and I liked it.
I didn't think the ending was a non sequitur, either. I thought the entire game built to it in some way. It wasn't overly apparent outside of missions, but it still showed.

Maybe I missed the ending clues. I will have to look for them when I start playing again.

I loved the game, but I find my interest always waned by the time I got to the second map. I've still spent more hours on it than most games however (I've gotten up to the second map about 20 times), but it's a little too repetitive.

Well ya those are some of the gameplay issues, plus:
- don't make everyone passing by attack you, it get's so fucking tedious
- guns cut down leaves/branches yet your machete does not, WTF
- give us some sort of story to motivate our actions, that last minute bodge job thing doesn't quite cut it

I think at the end of the day the game needs a rebuild, I love the idea and their first draft of it but they need to finish the damn thing.

1) Ya that would be pretty cool. I mean why would they attack you if your working for them, then again I thought thats how the game actually worked in the first place.

2) Slower respawn times would have been really nice. Its kind of hard to say though because I was constantly running into patrols driving in jeeps along the roads. That would mean that if they saw a wiped out checkpoint they would sent more people there.

3) No just no. I liked the fact that you had to walk or drive everywhere, plus it was a great was to get you to explore and collect those diamonds.

I know what you mean with the story it was really enjoyable but starting out they told you less about the story then they did in crackdown.
2. Thats true, there were a lot of roving patrols. But it still seemed overly fast.

3. I remember at one point I was in an extreme corner of the map and got into a fight and all the vehicles got destroyed, It was a long looooooooooooonggggg walk back to the road praying for a patrol so I could snipe the driver. That was the only point I really got mad at it.

Another note. I have heard before complaints that it was a "driving while looking at a map simulater" I thought the map was a awesome idea and well implimented.

The save comment just reminded me about that. It did suck. Glad its save anywhere on PC. SWEET.

In a game about open world that wants you to try different things it should have a better save system.

And you also can't save yourself from death by relocating you arm but thats still one baddass health system!

Ah yes "Map Reading The Game" AKA Far Cry 2

As you could guess the map singlehandedly ruined the game for me... Due to most missions taking you far out of the cities so Mr Map must be stared at once again!

I never understood this. It wasnt hard to read. You know a game that the map does actually suck. New Vegas. Fuck that map. FC2 was simple. I liked the map even.

2) Weapons failing on me. Now, I understand that they were going for realism, which is fine, but I often found that brand new guns wouldn't work anymore after a few reloads. What!? Why!? Not even Fallout 3 is this bad! Any "weapon condition" system should let you go around for a good long bit and go through some good firefights before letting it fail on you. While I'm at it, any open world game should give you enough ammo to get through more than one fight. Red Faction Guerilla ran into the same problem, though "ran into" is sort of a pun since I mostly killed enemies in that game by running into them.
Mostly valid points, but this one's kinda explained in the Jackal tapes. He mentions that some of the guns have been around for decades, so none of them are brand new. Well, his aren't, but maybe the arms dealer you buy from gets his stock from the Jackal.

What was wrong with the New Vegas map? I thought it was pretty good...

Anyway the way you were forced to whip out the map every few seconds annoyed me, unlike most games where you look at the map, set a waypoint and forget about it for 20 minutes

And driving while map reading (read: staring at your lap) really pissed me off.

Should have had the option to take a gun cleaning kit with you instead of grenades or something, and you could keep your weopons in top shape while sacrificing grenades which is significant. (but I always forget to use)

If i'm in the right mindset I can enjoy it.

But it isn't long before I start getting really irked off by missions taking you to the other side of the map, guard posts trying to tear you a new one every 0.0001 seconds and enemies trying to turn you into swiss cheese even if you're working for their faction.

Far Cry 2 [ I haven't played in ages, but I remember liking it a lot] needed more varied missions and more importantly:
Dangerous
Wild
Animals

It would have made the monotonous slog through the wilderness so much more interesting in my opinion, you'd be strolling through the jungle then, What's that? OHMYGODSHIT it's a giant gorilla / lion / horde of baboons come to tear me apart!

Let me clarify, the LOCAL map in New Vegas. I cannot tell what is a wall or walkway or room or what. Its just a shotgun blob of crap. The World map is perfectly fine. I tryed using the local map in the start or dead money. Useless.

I liked not having a magic waypoint system in FC2. Gave a better feeling of driving through confusing and unfamiliar country. And driving well I never found it a problem I guess.

I actually really liked the game, aside from being constantly attacked by everyone

honestly, there was no downtime to simply enjoy driving around without being rammed by 2 dudes in a pickup with a turret

LOL

Far Cry 1, Horrible geneticly mutated supermonsters with rocket launchers literally strapped to them.

Far Cry 2, I guess you can pet a zebra if you want...

True, but for me there's a certain precedence that gameplay should take over anything, including consistency. Mostly because these things are video games, the Jackal could have just mentioned this and the guns still last a fair amount of time and almost no one would have noticed it.
Well, some guns are more reliable than others, but I rarely had any jam on me. I never picked them up from dead people, and got new ones every time I passed a gun store. Only ones that really messed up on me were the ones with low reliability that I used way too much. It's not fun having an M79 screw up and drop its grenade five feet in front of you...and then explode.
