Far Cry 3
Far Cry 3 is an open world game, created by Ubisoft, which places you on an island where just about everything wants you dead. Initially I honestly wanted to kill the kids from the beginning of this game; not because they were having a good time but because they seemed too oblivious and vapid. It really didn?t come to much of a surprise when Vas shows up and locks them up. But the initial scenes just seem to go by very quickly...too quickly. Admittedly this game provides a wonderful tutorial in the form of your escape; it provides the perfect amount of tension and once your brother is dispatched the quick run away from Vas? encampment is beautifully scripted! The whole way down I felt Jason?s humanity as well as fear for the character?s life; especially when that large animal was chasing him. Ubisoft did a great job in placing the player behind the guise of Jason Brody; I did not want this man to die! I was so paranoid throughout the initial parts of the game that I didn?t even want to swim at first for fear of a shark attack. This feeling fades as you unlock skills and weapons. Who cares about a tiger when you can kill it in one shot?!
The gameplay of Far Cry 3 is amazing, and if you allow it you will become completely immersed within the role of Jason. As time progresses you open up the map and learn more skills, you also become a hunter. I began to notice how I reveled in taking outposts without being seen and got anxious to preform the more spectacular kills. The idea of using caged animals to do one?s bidding is an excellent touch as well.
This game is beautiful and more than fun, but I did have a few issues with it. Throughout the time I had played that game I had seen the same couple faces more than a few dozen times. I cannot honestly begin to explain how many times the same person in a different town has asked a favor of me! Also who every created those radio towers, you are an amazingly screwed up individual! I both love and loathe their design! Each ascent was so different and had me on the edge of my seat to the very top because I didn?t want Brody to die. I also experienced some tears within graphics during gameplay on the ps3 but that was during the ending sequence.
***SPOILERS***
This is a lovely game but the story is hard to swallow. Weakling of a man becomes cold hearted killer in order to save his friends and avenge his brother?s death. The weird part for me was how they tried to include Citra within the storyline; it almost seems like they shoe horned her in because her role is not very fleshed out and Citra just seems to be more of a sideshow. This game also skirts the idea of drug use but never really jumps right into the pool of narcotics they keep hinting at. Load screens also referenced Alice in Wonderland many times; but it didn?t seem to fit entirely. Yes there is that bowl of some sort of hallucinogen that gives you the story of how things were for Jason and his party (which reminded me why I didn?t like them in the intro scenes) but aside from him mixing herbs to survive and hunt there is really no other drug use. All of his made me feel that this entire game was a giant hallucination, and not just the ?boss battles?; but then those felt more real then the rest of the game...I took personal pleasure in killing Buck...lovely Kill Bill reference there. Another thing to note was how the endings seemed to have a huge morality theme attached to them, either be consumed by your animalistic desires (Citra kills you) or reject the man you have become (and Citra is killed by someone who has been jealous of you).
***END SPOILER***
The endings of this game felt lack luster and once you had unlocked all of Jason?s talents it is up to you to find out what else drives you to indulge in Ubisoft?s island paradise. But despite the plot holes as well as some characters feeling irrelevant, this game is truly a fun addition to one?s collection and I would recommend anyone who enjoys open world gameplay to give it a whirl. You will enjoy the thrill of the hunt and have a vast world to explore which is full of collectables. Oh, and please make sure to find Christopher Mintz!
