On a whim yesterday, I managed to pick up a copy of the original Far Cry on PC for £2.99 from Gamestation. It's installing on my laptop now, and I got to thinking. What tips and advice on the game can the Escapist community give me, to enjoy it fully?

For the record, I have no qualms in admitting that this is the first game I've ever played using the Cry Engine. Make of that what you will...

STEALTH. I got it recently, and you will get nowhere without any stealth.

Turn it on Medium, prepare for the hardest Medium Difficulty FPS that was made so awesome...

In other words, don't... stop...shooting. YOU WILL DIE!

Calumon: QuickSave is for wusses!

Expect no mercy from this game. It is a hard one, never finished it myself but it is still very fun :). I guess my tip its try to remain undetected if possible, they will come hard and fast if you decide to open fire.

Hope you enjoy it.

Indeed. It was more difficult than expected, although it is manageable.
And real men don't save until after they beat the game.

Brilliant, I've been looking for a decent stealthy game for a while too :D.

Bind left mouse button to quicksave, right button to quickload.

Expect enemies to see you trough cover and sniper-fire you from beyond your visibility range. Also assume they all carry ground radars, as that is the only thing that explains their almost mystical ability to zoom in on your location form the slightest hint.

This is a though puppy unless you've recently played Thief and have stealthing as backbone reflex.

Like others have said, since this game is very hard (even on easy difficulty), stealth is key. If you can't stay stealthy, make sure to know the locations of you enemies at all times. If you don't know the location of even a single enemy, you could easily be screwed in a matter of seconds.

Also, when using an automatic weapon set the firing mode to semi-auto, especially whenever you're taking out someone from a distance. Doing so increases your accuracy and also allows you to conserve ammo. Never use full-auto unless you are engaging targets at a close distance (or if the gun doesn't allow you to fire semi-auto).

Anyways, good luck. It's hard, but it's a damn fun game at the same time.
