What game has your favorite battle system that takes turns?
Think like pokemon and other rpgs.
-what makes it special?
-why do you like it?
-would you change anything?

Does FFX-2 count?
I just love the "All out beat down disguised as a turn based system" thing.
If not, Makai Kingdoms, though that's mostly the same case.

The Cross Stride system, from The World Ends With You. I'd be lying if I said it didn't have one heck of a learning curve, but it's also incredibly rewarding when you can clear a room in twenty seconds without letting the puck disappear.

I rather liked Ogre Battle MBQ's system. Ogre Battle does have a bit of a learning curve, but it is a shining example of a console RTS done right. How it works is, you set up individual squads with a variety of possible characters to put in. If they die, you can hire more, unless the leader dies in which case the unit is out for the level and there is a huge variety of units to select from. You control the squad by clicking where you want it to go on the world map. You can arrange the tactics of each individual squad in the pause menu, or pick from a few pre-sets in battle. The fight starts if they get too close to an enemy, and the fight works out automatically, working from the tactics you ordered it to use. If all the characters in the enemy unit die, the unit is destroyed. However you can also win by causing more damage than the enemy does, in which case the other unit is just moved out of the way on the world map. The great part though is that the battles only last for like 30 seconds, so as the level gets more intense you'll be keeping track of several units, each fighting their own battles. I guess that could put some people off, but for a strategy nut like me it's amazingly fun and it makes me sad that there are so few games like it.

Oh, and I also like old-school turn-based. Golden Sun FTW.

FFXII. It was just so fun without random encounters. The gambit system allowed me to minimize management among teammates. Too bad you couldn't take out Vahn from the party.

oh god, literally i can't name a "favorite"

i'll list a few though

(this one people might disagree with..well,probably)
FFXII
I LOVED later on in the game with setting up the perfect gambit system, then rolling into battles and doing esper after combo after combo, i thought the animations were really cool and loved smashing on bosses huge ass health bars with 39 hit combo's.

FF7
(the magicka+turn based but with a timer) the battle system really got me in to turn based rpg's, and i still love it to this day (played it this last year, still love it.

Kingdom hearts (one and two)
the fluid mechanics of rocking the titans to their knees is just pure badass, not to mention disney/FF character crossover smackdowns? yes please

FF Dissidia
quite possibly my favorite fighting game ever, and ever will be, I LOVE how the system works, and it does it all off one joy stick! the lock on works perfectly with the mechanics and even though you can grind to get better, true skill is the amazing lvl 50 vs lvl 110 battles later on :)

haha that's funny, as soon as i post, someone else also posts about loving ff12...

good on you, mate ;) it has it's kinks, especially with the license board, but i think it's alot of fun for strategy.

I hate to say this, but probably the best completely turn-based battle system is FFX, though I have yet to play even Xenosaga Ep. I to completion, less yet Ep. III which I hear is the 2nd coming of christ as far as JRPGs are concerned.

Now if we're just talking turn-based in that their are turns, as opposed to a real-time like a Tales of, Star Ocean, or Kingdom Hearts, that's a wide open question, but I'd say overall when it actually came to fighting (we can talk about managing characters later), FFVIII was completely badass because it was such an utterly broken fuck fest of destruction* that practically anything you could want done is yours given you're prepared to do it. Always get the first turn? Alert, boom. Make your time bar fill so fast it makes playing on the highest speed practically dizzying? Auto-Haste and Speed+80% it is. Easy, constant access to limit breaks? 99 Aura spells, go for it. Mug with full attack damage? Yes. Stats so preposterously broken you wonder how in the world you could ever conceivably lose? Junction Ultima, just do it (of special note, health in the multi-thousands is VERY easily achievable probably 5 hours into the game after you get Siren in Dollet). And keep in mind a lot of this was attached to easily the most badass animations of all time when the game launched, and some great battle music. Say what you will about draws, the results are glorious.

And it's not a boring kind of ridiculousness like FFVII either, which could be reduced to KoTR with Mime. You actually get better results with speed buffs and a good str junction than Eden, which, mind you, can break the damage barrier. At his most ridiculous, Squall easily hits with more power than characters that are considered outright gods in other titles, even without using the trigger mechanism, your attacks will probably be doing 9999 damage every time if you have the Lionheart and a decent Str junction.

* And remember, every good JRPG at some point is an utterly broken fuck fest of destruction, so don't ever count that against it.

Chrono Cross

It's perfect tbh. I'd take it over any FF battle system Square has used
Oh, I forgot about this one. Yeah, Chrono Cross is completely amazing in almost every conceivable way.

Temple of Elemental Evil

Overall a good if not outstanding experience, the tactical combat at least in that game is just amazingly well done. There is not a single better interpretation of DnD combat out there in the gaming industry, nor one nearly as complex or satisfying. Indeed I've always thought it's a great shame there was never a modding kit released for that game as I'd without doubt be an active participant in any sort of community devoted to creating more content with that engine Neverwinter Nights style.

Oh the wonders that could have been... if only.

So...my favorite turn-based system?

I'm really liking the FF-X one! I really like knowing who exactly it is that's going to be attacking so I can plan a strategy accordingly, ya know? I don't know of any other RPG or, turn-based fighting system where you can see the turn-order in the long term.

I say it counts, since I agree with you. One of the best battle systems in the series so far.

Yay.
And I agree on that as well.
Just so much fun. I mean you're only mashing the X button as fast as you can but it's just sooooo satisfying.

So you just left out the part of this being RPG only in the title? You know more people will walk in and say how Skyrim is their favorite.

Deus Ex is my favorite combat system for a RPG. But if it has to be turn based then it definitely Frozen Synapse, so much depth you don't even know.

Hmm...

Dark Souls in action for depth and tactics, but Assassin's Creed and Prince of Persia get points for letting you flip all over the place.

Turn based? This thing here:
http://armorgames.com/play/505/sonny

Turn-based action RPG. And it's free. Aside from that though, I don't really play turn based games...

however best combat system by far is the Real Time strategy Myth II Soulblighter. Ive never seen so many variables, the arrows fly like they are being shot by real bowmen, missing every now and then, and as more kills gives them experience more precise the shot.

The dwarves throw Molotovs that can snuff out and be left on the battlefield to ricochet when you toss another next to it for that extra range. There is so much thought and tactics in this game it makes modern games look like minesweeper.

This game is 12 years mind you, and whenever you want to compare a game. Compare it to this one.

I like the roguelike system (manage resources, find creative solutions to problems, and use spatial aspects of the dungeon like chokepoints, traps, etc.) and the Devil Survivor system (you got SRPG in my SMT! You got SMT in my SRPG!)
