Well, they're short stories, but my favorite series is Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Dresden Files most definitely; great world, intriguing characters, badass action, sadly Mr. Jim Butcher has been an utter bastard with cliffhangers lately.
Indeed he has...

For me it would be a three way tie between The Dresden Files, Classic Battletech, and the Twenty Palaces. Awesome worlds, cool character, and they keep me turning pages.

The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien, definitely. Nothing comes close to them, personally.

I could never really get into the Wheel of Time series. Some good stories in there, but Robert Jordan needed an editor; those books ought to have been cut down by half. (And I've got no problem with really long works of fiction, I just think he regularly included unnecessary garbage).

I've probably got more favorite comic book series than actual book series. Y: The Last Man, Transmetropolitan and Ex Machina being my favorites.

Flashman of course. Everybody?s favourite cowardly hero. Could be considered to be Falstaff if he would stop running long enough to be the subject of a comparison.

For the longest time it was the discworld series by a huge margin. Wonderfully funny with a good grip on the real world in ways you don't expect in fantasy novels.

Now it's a dead heat between Discworld and the Dresden Files. Well done Mr Butcher.

Third, and sorry to you Hitchhiker's Guide fans but these are better, the Dirk Gently series. It's a terrible shame that the third book wasn't completed before the death of Douglas Adams.

The Hitchhiker's Guide series is the first full series that I ever read and definitely a favourite.

The Disc World series is another favourite being quite like "if Douglas Adam's wrote fantasy".

Piers Anthony's Immortal Incarnations series was fun, I have yet to read any of his other books though.

Gregory McGuire is beginning to develop somewhat of a series based on The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. So far it has four novels. Most have probably heard of Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Second was Son of a Witch. Third was A Lion Among Men. And looking it up just now I found that there was apparently a fourth novel to come out on the first of this month called Out of Oz. I'll have to check that out.

I'm really bad at picking favourites. I do think though that my most favourite series so far is the Amber Chronicles by Roger Zelazny. The first half any way. The second half was not quite as good unfortuntely.

Currently reading the Song of Ice and Fire series. After watching the first season of the show I decided I did not want to wait around for season two.

As seen by my avatar, my favorite series of books are The Malazan Book of The Fallen.

A book about gods, demi-gods, humans and other non-tolkien races fighting it out in the most realized fantasy world since Tolkien which still manages to be intelligent and heartwarming. Doesnt get much better then that.

Three Worlds Cycle Series by Ian Irvine, it is little know but I love it so far only read the first quartet but it was possibly the best story, book or otherwise, Iv experienced in a long time. I do love Stephen King but I haven't read Dark Tower series yet, though by all these replies Im gonna try and get it out the library. If any other Escapists have read this could they tell me their opinion.

Wheel of Time - Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson.

Definition of epic fantasy.
Ohh!
You sir have a good taste for fantasy.

However LoTR and A Song of Ice and Fire is superior.

Varg Veum... A very well known author from my city writes these books about a private detective named Varg Veum. They are in Norwegian, though I'm sure it's not all that hard to find English translations of them, and they are extremely popular.

Very good and thrilling books.

They recently made (and still make) a bunch of movies based on the books too now though they are in Norwegian so anyone interested would have to deal with that (having to read the text!). The only problem with those movies is the dialect of the main character (Veum himself that is) is the wrong one! He has an east-Norwegian dialect, and the character is from (and lives and works in, and is based on) west-Norway and of course had a west-Norwegian dialect in the radio plays from long before the movies came into creation...
A problem only us and other norwegians would ever notice.

Indeed, but no less a problem! The movies are great, and the actor is very good... Until that very moment when he opens his mouth X3.
