Favorite characters in literature.

To every mention of the characters in the Steven Erickson books, I actually think the least one-sided character is:

Toc the Younger. His refusal to follow directly in his father's footsteps, his rebellion against Envy, his whole story in Memories of Ice, it just reinforced how he is the most relatable and human character in the book, as far as I am concerned. He doesn't have any of the superpowers like Ben or Rake, or even Kalam for that matter, and it makes him so vulnerable, and yet he always makes his stand. Definitely my favorite character in the series.

Don't get me wrong, all of the characters are great and all, but that one is my favorite.

You have a point in him being the most human, but in that aspect Whiskeyjack also deserves a mention, among many others...

Oh, how I could discuss characters from Malazan Book of the Fallen for eternities...

Is Anton Chigurh really a sadist? I wouldn't think so. He doesn't seem to take pleasure from it, it seems more like "it's just buisiness..."
Oh, and there's lots of awesome characters mentioned in this thread. Makes me wanna re-read all those books; when there's so many I still haven't read...

Matthew Shardlake from C. J. Sansom's books, because he's a hunchback lawyer and not the the tall, strong and manly stereotype all too often present in historical and fantasy fiction.

Kenneth Toomey of Anthony Burgess' "Earthly Powers", because he is one of the best rounded and most human fictional characters I have ever read.

I very seriously do not remember anyone named Logan from this book, but you did make me think of Darl from As I Lay Dying.

Also, Howard Roark from The Fountainhead, the Narrator in Fight Club, Tom Joad from The Grapes of Wrath, and Death from The Book Thief.

Christopher Boone, the narrator and protagonist of "The Curious Incident of The dog in the Night time" who has Aspergers. Such a brilliant book, very well written. Or Richard or Daffy from The Beach. I could relate to Richard very well. But then again, I am captivated by Edgar Allan Poe's madmen.
