The standard was more against men "always consenting" than the other way around.
And that is simply not true. My father, a prison worker, has a number of women currently inside his prison for sexual assault against men (there is no "Rape" conviction in Australia. It is simply called sexual assault with a sentence depending on the severity).

This idea that women and men have separate rules for rape is nonsense. The law is the law.

If you have any evidence to support your theory that a man claiming to have been raped would be 'laughed at by police officials' and have their claim 'dismissed,' please, show me.
Well, it's not a real life example, but look at the movie 40 Days and 40 Nights. Hell, this double standard is the last 15 minutes of the movie.

Yep. I am an atheist.
How'd you guess?
I don't see how that makes my point any less relevant though. If you believe in one religion and mock another you're a hypocrite.

I dunno, I guess I just got really pissed off a while back when I was talking to some friends of the family, one of which is a priest. They were telling us about this muslim lady with whom they'd become acquainted and were currently helping with some immigration issues or something. She had apparently told them she'd pray for them and they quite literally said (to me, not her) "As if it works".

They're good people (as evidenced by them helping this lady), but that attitude was something I just didn't think they had in them. I just froze.

As always I defer to TV Tropes when disseminating information. The article is shockingly exhaustive and is guaranteed to generate at least a little anger (and incidentally, as with everything to do with TV Tropes comes with the standard warning about how it will eat hours of your time). Personally however, there are a few that constantly enrage me from both their nature and their prevalence amongst humans:

Acceptable targets - Certain groups of people are allowed to be mocked, ridiculed, or even portrayed as inherently dispicable, but other groups aren't, for entirely arbitrary reasons. There is no reason why portraying the US as full of fat idiots or Japanese as racist perverts or Russians as drunk louts is any less offensive than portraying any African people as primitive tribals or any Arab people as towel-wearing warmongers. Either it's all acceptable, or none of it is.

Acceptable hobbies - Someone who obsesses night and day about Local Sports Team #14, following every game and learning every single facet of their history is perfectly fine. But if someone displays that same level of obsession for a book series or a game, then they're pathetic nerds that live in their parents' basement and will never have sex.

Crossdressing - Females are allowed to wear pants, suits, and other "traditionally male" clothing with little mention, but a male wearing dresses, high-heeled shoes or cosmetics is either a sexual deviant or mentally ill.

Femininity - Displaying any conventional or typical feminine characteristics at all instantly means a female character is a bad role model and reinforces negative sterotypes, regardless of anything else about the character

Sex vs Violence - Bare breasts will get a film or series a more restricted classification than killing hundreds of people on-screen, and bare genitals will almost never get anything than the most restricted classification, while graphic torture can scrape past on the second or even thrid highest. This is only merely a well-understood example however, and I only use it because including more detail would keep me here all day.

Heterosexual romance vs homosexual romance - Every piece of fiction, ever, is required to feature some sort of heterosexual relationship, regardless of its inanity or poor writing. Any homosexual relationship is either shoved into the background (because gays are icky but we like their money), shoved into the foreground as if two people of the same sex in a romantic relationship is supposed to be praised as something new and innovative, or completely ignored as even a possibility.

Rape - Holy shit, I hate this one so much I can barely even joke about it. For females, either rape is a compliment meaning that people find them attractive, simply a male "mastering" a particularly disobedient partner who "obviously" wants it, or even a perfect basis to begin a relationship (fortunately, this one has managed to recently fall out of favour). For males, either they can't be raped at all, it's a subject of mocking and laughter, or just punishment for some discretion.

Christian religions that state you have to accept Jesus to get into Heaven, when Jesus is the (supposed) son of God, who last time I checked had a big rule about Who's Number 1.
Jesus is supposed to be the paragon of what it meant to be a Christian. be like Jesus (minus the miracals) and it's off to heaven. 'cuz apparenly God can't just come down and tell us what he wants us to do himself.

of course it's more reasonable, there's more Christians here. isn't that how any society works? we use the majority to decide what's popular, who our leaders are and what's normal right? you group relegios people but the relegious people that you're talking about don't see ANY link between thier two beliefs.

you could imagine how pissed an Ancient Greek and Norseman would be if a Christian just said they were worshipping the same pagan gods. the Christian doesn't understand any better or worse than you do. though I am making an big assumption on that last sentance.

even though mans work is defined by your genetics and womans work is defined by old school subjugation.

man, I feel like more of a douche than usual when writing this post.

I'm not saying there's any link between their religions. I'm just saying Hindus are just as likely to be right as Muslims are.

and I'm saying that they would never agree with that being a double standard. stupid people are just as stupid no matter what faction they belong to. these guys see God as Fact and a six armed diety looks as silly to them as it does to you.

frankly though, people let themselves get influenced by much more trivial/superfluous/selfish/pointless things than Gods and the superntural *glares at audience*

though I suppose if you can see the sillyness of getting worked up about a Video Game launch day (ever seen a guy crumble at the news of a delay?) then you... I forgot where I was going with this... midnight... sleep~

I had such fun with a christian friend of mine yesterday. He made a crack about me being indecisive or souless, so I returned with this gem (borrowed from another friend).

'Odin promised to rid the world of frost giants. Jesus promised to rid the world of bad people. You don't see any frost giants around, do you?'

We both had such a great laugh about it, but someone who overheard me say that looked at me like I wasn't wearing any pants or something equally shocking! So yeah, it annoys me most when some things are 'acceptable targets' and free to be joked about and some are 'not funny dude'.

I too get tired of the male-female vs female-male violence standards. I figure the phrase "Don't hit a lady" becomes null and void once said "lady" hits me. Yeah, punching me means "lady" status revoked, *****.

You can make and/or post examples in a whine topic on the Escapist where everyone covers the same ground multiple times as long as you're a cloistered white straight teenage male and possibly non-American.

You're joking right. Where I'm from (Australia) everything you say that can even remotely be considered racist will be if you're white but black people can say whatever they want and nobody will say anything against it.
i totally agree with that... in australia its really the white man last (even after the white woman) like we feel we have to appologize for everything that anyone has ever done wrong... or might do wrong in the future...

I've spent a lot of time commenting on other people's double standards, but I haven't even come up with one of my own.

Well my favorite double standard has already been named, so in an effort to not be repetitive, I'll list another classic example.

If I say the word "black" in French, then I'm educated and multicultural, and possibly may be talking about a murder mystery or other crime story.

However, if I say the word "black" in Spanish, then I'm an ignorant racist bastard, and I'm probably going to hang someone.

Also, in general, speaking in most european languages (most as in any that aren't Spanish or English) makes one cultured and educated. However, speaking Spanish makes me a macho idiot, and speaking Japanese makes me a basement dwelling loser nerd.

"Why do you grow your hair so long?" "Because I like it." "That's a bad reason!" "Why is your hair long?" "I'm a girl?"

/facepalm. I miss my long hair sometimes. Sometimes I really don't.

How exactly is that a double standard?

They have a loophole called "The Holy Trinity" God,Jesus and the Holy Spirit are 3 persons but 1 God.By accepting Jesus as your saviour you are in fact accepting God
