Favorite double standards

I think my favorite double-standards are the following:

-Only 'fat' and 'ugly' men and women can like video games or be nerds. Because there have never been fat ugly fans of other things, don't you know?
-If you watch cartoons you are a child, but playing/watching sports is TOTALLY adult.
-If you didn't support Bush, you were anti-American, but not supporting Obama is just standing up for 'civil liberties'. (Thank you, Tea-Party)

-Knowing how to fix a computer makes you a genius, knowing how to fix a car makes you a redneck.
-You like anime then you're a pervert, but watching Girls Gone Wild makes you a REAL man.
-For girls, showing off your body makes you a slut, covering up makes you a prude.
-If you're a feminist: you must be a man-hating lesbian, if you're not, then you're a battered house-wife.

Maternity leave.

Wait how is Maternity Leave a double standard?

If I, as a man, decided that I wanted six months (or whatever the standard is) off work. In order to pursue a NON-WORK related interest. Which for a COMPANY, having a child is.

Then I'd expect that six months to be without pay, and the employer would be within their rights to sack me. For the inconvenience. However if I were a pregnant woman; who was fired. I could sue, how is that fair?

Not certain I would attribute the double standard title on this, although you do have a decent argument. What I find irksome is how ridiculous the amount of time off women are allowed off where the company can do little, to nothing, about it. Nowadays you have a full year in some instances. I do not believe it should extent three months and even that is long. You are always welcome to take additional time off but a company should not be required to hold your position for a year. Granted, often you see companies opt for the many loopholes to compensate.

Women can give birth however many times they like, but us Men can't even do it once.

Oh they can keep this one. None of us will complain.

My 'favorite' double standard is the one dealing with acceptable exposure.

If a man takes off his shirt to flaunt what he's got, he's a manly man that it's okay for children to look up to. Said flaunting of physique might even help him to become governor some day (as well as to sire an illegitimate child or two along the way).

If a woman takes off her shirt for so much as ventilation, she's a shameless harlot whose going to corrupt the children of the world (maybe even her own child if she was about to breastfeed her/him?) and a disgrace to society.

Go down to a beach this summer. I can guarantee the skimpiest beach-wear you'll see is that on a female. You're not going to see a dude on the beach wearing nothing but a thong.

Unless you live near a nude beach, of course, in which case disregard this =P

True, men don't have breasts, but that doesn't mean Faux Furry doesn't have a point. Breasts have only become associated with sexuality through society, they aren't inherently sexual objects. I'm not a burn-your-bra type feminist or anything (though I full-heartedly support women's rights), but really, it's phenomenally unfair situation. You don't know how many times I've been outside on a roasting hot day, seeing near-enough every guy swaggering around with no top on and been desperate to do the same just to cool off.

The idea that seeing a women's breasts could corrupt a child is absurd. They have no concept of sexuality (at a young age) beyond what is taught to them by their elders. They won't look at a topless women and see it as any different (bar the shape of course) from a topless man.

And in response to your comment on swimsuits; Yes, women are more likely to dress in that way than men, but again that's through the influence of society. Skimpy swimwear is produced almost exclusively for women, who have every right to choose to wear it. If a man however is seen dressing provocatively he'll most likely be mocked, so it's logical that most men would choose to wear something else. And hey, guess what men don't wear when they swim? Any kind of top. Another example of the double-standard regarding exposure.

However, whilst this is mainly unfair to women, men suffer because of it too. Continuing your example of beachwear, it is incredibly unlikely to see a young man on a hot enough day wearing a top. Sure, older, more self-confident men might still cover up, but chances are that a guy around his friends will feel the need to be semi-nude. A lot of my male friends aren't comfortable with this, they feel too exposed, yet they'll have the piss ripped out of them if they don't. Very unfair.

Finally, I'd like to apologise if I came across aggressively here. It's not my intention, I assure you. I just felt the point could be debated, but I apologise if I've done so in an offensive manner.

In Sweden both parents get 240 days leave each to spend with their child. With pay. One of the reasons why Sweden is a good place to raise kids =)

OT: If a woman doesn't wear make-up she's considered unfeminine and unattractive. A man on the other hand can practically get away with looking like he just rolled out of bed. (a gross over-generalisation I know, but I'm tired of make-over rom-coms were a woman is considered dog-ugly until she puts on a little lipgloss.)

I would bet you cant find just 1 example of a woman being convicted of date rape with alcohol.

How much money? 'Cause I just spoke to my father and he has a female inmate serving time for sexually assaulting (there is no "Rape" charge, it is called sexual assault in Australia, regardless of gender) a man who was drunk at a party. So too has he 'looked after' many, many other women serving time for sexual assault.

If you are in the U.S the law was changed long ago so a man can indeed be raped. If you are in England or Australia, this is also true - though, once again it should be noted that although called rape, the actual charge on their record in the latter two countries is sexual assault.

Well i happen to know Australia does not have uniform defenitions and they vary from between states and terretories, and there are still australian states that can convict you of rape. Also while america changed the laws in 1970 so that rape is no longer classified as something that a man does to a woman, most states still require "forced penetration" meaning that if a woman has sex with an unconsious man it in fact cannot be classified as rape. This usually means that it was something more severe than they got drunk and hooked up in a bar, such as my origional quote says.

One of the dumbest double standards is that there is never real female villains.

I'm not even sure who this is more offensive to, but whenever a villain comes up and a story and they are female withing 5 minutes they will become the most sympathetic villain ever who is sometimes more righteous than the people they are fighting.

Are you fucking kidding me. Women can be just as intelligent, cunning and evil as men. I would say that young teenage girls (under 15) are the only beings objectively evil in the entire universe.
