Nothing's free pal, except for the love of a good woman.
Everything else you have to pay for.

Eh, this hardly fits the bill, but Tag (http://www.thepowerofpaint.com/?page_id=9) is a fantastic first-person puzzle game. And it's free! Still, if you're looking for a multiplayer FPS, I think you may find it difficult to find a free one.

New thought: If you own a game that uses the Half Life 2 engine, you can download mods off Steam, some of which are really good.

Spend the 20 or 30 bucks for Team Fortress 2. It's just better that way.

I don't know about that, it's a cheap ripoff of Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory (and Wolf: ET is free)
http://www.splashdamage.com/wolfet
Also here are some games that are free too:
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/101029-13-free-midway-games
Here is the list of the free games:
Area-51, PSI-OPS, The Suffering, Far Cry, Prince of Persia: the Sands of Time, Ghost Recon, Rayman Raving Rabids, Full Spectrum Warrior, Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War, Savage 2: A Tortured Soul (yes, I know that some of these are not FPS, but I just wanted to put up a full list if your interested in some of the other games.

P.S. If you love Wolf: ET and you have 30 bucks, pick up Enemy Territory: Quake Wars and get a real deal

Couldn't agree with you more. Best. Game. Ever.

/thread
While* agreeing with you, why has no one mentioned the lack of correlation between the name of this thread and the OP?

He's asking us for our favorite (free, online) FPS game so he can join it too. But I concur, I expected something somewhat different when I clicked on this thread too.

Doom/Quake can be had free from many places, I'm not sure whether it actually is freeware though.

Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory

Or.
Counter Strike:Source is $9.99 (complete with minimum 68'000+ players at any one time, for comparison Halo 3 averages around 38'000), it would also give you access to Source Mods, which are all free and in some cases utterly brilliant.

I haven't tried WarRock, but I know it's one of the free multiplayer FPSs.
Also, my definite favorite free FPS is Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

Have a look at www.fallenearth.com This is a new MMO FPS which is currently in closed beta. The client is looking really good and they are open to new Beta Testers. If you like Fallout for the setting and the barron landscapes then play this as it is well worth it
