Hey escapist, what was one of your favorite myths about a game? For me it was the whole bigfoot in San Andreas thing. Even though I know it was a mod, that badlands area still creeps me out.

That pressing down + B when you threw a ball in Pokemon actually bloody did something
At least it felt like you were trying instead of just watching the ball hit and miss/catch.

The Golden Warthog in Halo 3. Some people I met actually tried to get it. I laughed.

The next best one was telling kids that sticking their Halo 3 disk in the microwave for 30 seconds will unlock Recon armor. A person immediately left the game after that.

Exactly. That's why I love it. And when it failed, you thought 'well, maybe it didn't work then...but it might work the next time!'

If you defeat some number of blanks in SSB Melee's Hardcore survival mode you would unlock Sonic.

There was the whole 'You can play as Aeris after disc 1' thing that followed Final Fantasy 7 for a long time.

Also, there's the 'Excalibur 2' bit in Final Fantasy 9. Apparently, if you play through a second time and finish in under 10 hours or something, you get that sword. I realize this is a real aspect to the game, but why oh why would anyone want to do it?

Big Foot in GTA:San Andreas.
Saving Aeris in FFVII
The latter being one of the big major ones in gaming history I believe.

Shadows of the Empire for the N64, during the speeder-bike chase, it was rumored that if you parked your speeder near the Sarlaac pit, you'd dismount, climb down, and play through a short level in the stomach before resuming the rest of the race.

Finding all- and I mean ALL- the magic feathers in The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening would yield up not just the Master Sword but (gasp) The Master Dagger, which was a one-hit kill for all monsters.
I still want it...

Yoshi in Super Mario 64. Without a doubt.
Wait, that's not true?
I really thought that was.
Well, to this very date, no one has found Yoshi, so it just can't be true.
