Since there appear to be a lot of Metal/Punk/Hard-Core fans on this forum that quickly invade most general music threads, I thought I'd start one for those of us who like our music on the slightly lighter side.

So, what are the favorite Indie-Pop-Rock artists among The Escapist's forum community?

Indie rock...hmmmm....

I definately enjoy Mr. Something Something, but I wouldn't classify them as rock, more of an afro funk type of music (but they classify themselves as rock). Definately give them a look, they are out of Toronto and do a really good live show.

I just started listening to MGMT (The Management) and their extremely wonky hippy pop-rock. Gotta say it's interesting stuff.

Also, Vampire Weekend is interesting, sort of Orchestral Afro-Pop with a really preppy elitist edge. Basically sounds like distilled whimsy.

Not exactly, like I said, most general music threads are dominated by Metal Heads and due to poor Genre Naming, Indie Rock (and Indie Pop) isn't JUST Independant music but represents a style of music conveyed by some key artists, whom I can't really name because I am really not that big of a music nerd.

There is a very interesting "indie" scene in Spain with bands like Bushido, Manta Ray and Columpio Asesino; Also, I entirely agree with what you said about "indie" is not just indepentant from major record lables but a genre in itself, having said that, there are a lot of good "indie" bands from the 70's and 80's; just to name a few:
- The Residents
- La Dusseldorf
- Cluster
- Ash Ra Tempel
- Faust

OK Go are my favourite band ever, and they are truly the epitome of pop-rock. Although if you say 'indie' in Britain, it usually means 'singers' from Sheffield (who can't hold a note) and instruments which are out of tune, with no melody to tie them all together. That's why I stay away from the scene over here, really; its just not refined enough.

Splashdown are extremely underrated, I don't like them as much as I used to, but without them I'd still be stuck on '90s punk. And that would be horrifying.

Also, The Dresden Dolls, Sonic Youth, Emilie Autumn and Elvis Costello, on top of my mind.

But yeah, do check out Splashdown if you have any interest in electro-ish pop music with latin influences.

Wait, I don't think anyone has such specific interests. Well they're still awesome, here : http://www.injected.org/splashdown/downloads.html

Personally I think the best indie artists are those from the 80s- Sonic Youth, the Pixies, Dinosaur Jr and the like.
Dinosaur Jr. are still around and rockin hard... occasionally.

In Canada the sound is defined by bands like The Arcade Fire, The New Pornographers, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade, Islands, STARS and other such bands. Sometimes orchestral and dark, sometimes light and tinkly.

Believe it or not, there is more to the British indie scene (and indeed the Yorkshire indie scene) than the Artic Fucking Monkeys.

Forward Russia!, Sky Larkin, Los Campesinos, You Say Party We Say Die and The Young Knives are some of my faves.

Some older bands that I used to listen to...
  • Camper Van Beethoven
    Kill Creek
    The Smalls
    Archers Of Loaf
    Failure
...typically, I really like guitar-driven rock, but I don't want to scare anyone with Tanner, Circus Lupus, Craw, etc.

Kill Creek was nice enough to put St. Valentine's Garage (1994) up for download. This is one of the best albums from back in the day. Check it out here... http://www.killcreek.com/discog/stvg/stvgaudio.html

I recommend listening to Cosmetic Surgery, Million, and Gett On to get a feel for if you'd appreciate this album. If you don't like this album, you suck. ;-)

does Gomez count as indie?
i have virtually no indie exposure, i spent the last few years listening to rock bands from the 70's and the 80's and some amount of jazz... does anyone know more indie bands that sound like Gomez?
i once listened to a few songs by death cab for cutie, but didn't really like it too much..

Jamendo.com has a bunch of indie stuff. (for free, of course)

My favorite is Josh Woodward. His stuff is on that site.
