I'm looking for some fun games to add to my collection, but Google searches always lead to extremely old-school point-and-click adventures and games that require a 0.125ghz processor. I'd think that in this day, the phrase "lower-end game" wouldn't be so sad, but what can you do? So, if you've got any games you love to play from 2005 or 2006 or such, go ahead and recommend them here.

Alright, my only gaming machine is a 2008 laptop, a Compaq Presario CQ50-WM that I got in the Wal-Mart Black Friday sale for only $300 ;) It has a 2.0GHZ processor, 2GB ram, and a low-end onboard graphics card. I can run the Source engine games, CoD4, etc., but I've had trouble running Bioshock and Assassin's Creed. I enjoy pretty much any type of game, from Team Fortress 2 to Peggle, the only exception I can think of being simulators - no rollercoaster parks, no Sims 3.

Team Fortress 2, Knytt Stories, Peggle (+ Peggle Extreme), Neverwinter Nights 2, Fable: TLC, Call of Duty 4, Age of Mythology (+Titans Expansion), Portal.

It's older than 2005/2006 but - Operation Flashpoint is bloody brilliant.

And you can mod the hell out of it.

THIS!
O:FP is Exceptionally fun!

Or try The GTA Series (3,VC,SA.) I always found they control much better on the PC, and they don't require a beefy PC to run.

If you want a HIGH resource game that LOOKS low resource, try Dwarf Fortress. =D

Also, Psychonauts.
Also, Half-Life.
Also,...I could go on for a while, but I won't.

Starcraft, C&C games, and Warcraft 3 are good RTS games that are fairly low resource.

Mount and Blade, best sword to sword comat I have ever seen, and very scaleable. You are bascially given a massive map with 5 rival kingdoms and your pretty uch left to do as you please. You can riase and army and fight for an existing kingdom, or crave out your own.
The support community is massive and the sheer amount of tweaks and add ons is staggering.

A game from 2008 called Mount&Blade, which takes 519MB space without mods.

It's a strategy game where you have an army (rather small) and take castles (if you're strong enough).

When you enter a battle, you control your character by swinging, blocking or shooting with various weapons.

You have skills and attributes, which strengthens your character in and out of battle. You also gain experience and level, which allows you to increase your skills and attributes.

I can put a strain on your PC if there are a lot of units in the battlefield, but I find it to be one of the best low-end games I have tried.

Plus, there are hundreds of mods you can download, which change everything, even graphical upgrades, go check it out! =).

EDIT: Ninja'd -.-.

Both KotORs, Starcraft, Warcraft II & III, C&C: Red Alert 2 (and its expansion), Battlefield 1942, Neverwinter Nights: Platinum, Elder Scrolls III are games I can list off the top of my head.

There are a lot of good RTSs for that era of PC. The first couple Total War games, pre-IV Civ series, American Conquest and Cossacks. There's also Age of Empires II. I'm also a big fan of Tropico, though a resort island simulator chock-full of goofy political commentary isn't for everyone.

If you're looking for more action, try the Command and Conquer series or Homeworld. And an older laptop should be able to run the Medal of Honor WWII games and the early Hitmans.

And of course, there's always the Sims and GREATEST 2D RPG EVER, Diablo II.

Strangely the later ones require a surprisingly high amount of processing power. 09's 3D match engine won't run very well on my PC, as well as being terrible.
But they are brilliant games, I'll grant you.

Examples, examples...Age of Empires? I don't know the minimum requirements for Age of Mythology but that's one of the best games I've ever played.

Septerra Core,
Myst and Riven,
the 2-D flash version of Portal,
and (at a stretch) Guild Wars.
