I was a little curious about this and decided to ask the escapist to weigh in.

What is your favorite sex/romance scene in a video game? (you can push into movies or even comics or books too if you like)

For me personally, while I want to go ahead and talk about the Mass Effect series, ranging between the two there was a lot of well written romantic plot; but what really clinched it for me, was the scene at pretty much the beginning of the game The Darkness.

For those that haven't played it, I feel it's worth it for this part alone. There's a scene where after his powers have sorta begun to manifest and he spent the day (tutorial mission) ripping apart, maiming, and shooting rival mobsters, he comes home to his girlfriend's little apartment where she is waiting for him watching tv. All from his perspective, and under your control, you sit down next to her on the couch and just either watch tv or listen to her as she falls asleep on your arm. You can even go ahead and just get up. But I sat there for nearly ten minutes because even though there was no kissing, or foreplay or anything even indicative of romance, the simple act of her snuggling up to you after you've murdered half a score of vicious mobsters and crooked cops is a little jarring. She doesn't know what you've been through, she doesn't know you just finished literally washing the blood and guts out of your shirt before getting home, and she just lays her head on your shoulder and slowly falls asleep.

The entire scene is even entirely devoid of dialogue once she's asleep. But I don't know, it could be the framing, the angle or the only lighting being from the still on and quiet tv on the far wall, but I was moved and motivated to protect her, which actually becomes a strong plot point in the ensuing storyline.

So! What's your favorite romantic or sex scene in a video game? For reasons ranging from how convincing or immersive, to graphic and entertaining, share your stories of video game love and lust!

The end of Uncharted 2. Drake and Elena are standing on a cliff side. They kiss.

I was happy all over.

I would say very few. Vidya games generally suck when it comes to love and sex. The one from The Darkness sounds very well done. Prince of Persia: SoT is okay, but it mostly stands out for not being glaringly bad and being an effectively integrated part of a larger story.

I would storm the gates of the black city at your side. Never doubt that.

*sniffle

Zevran, you fruitcake. Honestly the last half of his romance is made of undiluted win. Morrigan and Alistair's were also excellent.

And I will disagree with you there, video games have a huge potential, and there are plenty of games that do it right. FF8, ICO, FF10, Max Payne 2, yeah Prince of Persia too. And I'm sure there are others...

But.... yeah I'll also agree. There are way too many that just botch it

Sex scenes in video games need to die out, except for ones which are done to humorous effect. But I simply can't take games with "meaningful" sex scenes (Like Heavy Rain) seriously.

Tali is Mass Effect 2. I was more drawn to an alien who's face I couldn't see than Miranda, the sexy, shapely woman of the same species. Tali reminded me of my first serious romance. It was the summer after my highschool graduation. I kinda fell for this nerdy Russian girl a year older than me. Other than her foreign accent and awkward shyness, she didn't have much else in terms of similarities with Tali.

I also had a fling with a chick that reminds me of Jack, but that story isn't as sweet.

I was super torn on that one.

I thought it seemed really shoehorned in, but it also made sense on a psychological level.

In any case, what about romance scenes?

Not many games have good relationship scenes, so I'll have to go with ME2 as well, only Jack is my pick. Slowly breaking down her tough exterior to see her grow emotionally attached to my Shep was a wonderful thing. Her words made me smile, especially the ones along the lines of "I've never spoken to anyone like this before... so fuck you." That was without a doubt the most loving "fuck you" I've ever heard XD

Honestly, the best one I've seen isn't even the sex scene, but an earlier kiss instead. And that's between Anders and Hawke in Dragon Age II. One minute you're talking and lightly flirting, and the next minute--BAM! Anders pushes Hawke against the wall and attacks him. But what sells it is the V/O. The way voice actor Adam Howden pants heavily afterward speaks to all kinds of repression and lust and restrain.

Even the sex scenes in Mass Effect, while well done, didn't make me feel that level of emotion. See for yourself (video features a male Hawke, since that was my first run-through too):

I actually think ME2 is an example of how not to do it. The romances basically go dialogue tree -> sex -> nada, and aren't integrated into the story at all. It felt kind of gratuitous, TBH.

Yeah, when playing through that scene I was half-convinced that this was the reason that the reporter was female - Exploitation of lady parts and lady vulnerability.

In terms of romantic scenes - Well, it's slim pickings, but I do remember liking the chemestry that was established between John Marston and his wife during the tail end of Red Dead Redemption.

Anders and Hawke

Honestly, I think that in terms of writing [http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/6046067] Dragon Age 2 romances are enough to make me wonder if Dragon Age: Origins was a fluke. In terms of plot integration, OTOH, the Anders one in particular I think is handled very well.

I agree somewhat - the sex part shouldn't feel like a reward, it'd be more interesting if that was only halfway through the "romance quests", because after that all you usually have left to do is the end-game, where it has no real relevance.

As for your point about SoT, I thought it was much more than OK. The decision to not actually show anything certainly worked in its favour (escaping the idea of it being a "reward), and it was only done after some massive progression in the arcs of both characters.

Oh yeah, absolutely - in terms of integration into the story and the characters, it's absolutely brilliant. Seriously, anyone who wants to put a romance in their game should play Sands of Time and take notes.

I was more talking about the scene itself - the direction, artstyle, etc. Of course, I've never run across a sex scene I can say I've liked (they generally either feel too explicit or don't resemble actual sex), so it's entirely possible the highest praise I can give to a sex scene is that it didn't annoy me haha.

Adopted son! that's important lol

I agree, video games have the potential to win out on most subjects over other media, however, the key word is potential. and games very rarely reach this potential. and when it's not done well it's done badly.

Yeah, the Paragon romance subplot with Jack is astonishingly sweet - My pick for my "main" Shepard was still Tali, but I think Jack's one of the most underrated characters in the game. Her voice acting is great too, few game voice actors can really sell cursing/anger/vulnerability as naturally as that.

Someone mentioned Uncharted 2 up there, and I gotta say.. really? I really like the Uncharted games, overall, but that one point still gets me. Playing through, I didn't sense any chemistry between Drake and Elena at all. She's just such a bland character compared to Drake. I maintain that despite her flaws, Chloe was the better woman for him.

For my addition to the thread: I thought the obvious sexual tension between Alyx and Gordon in the HL2 games was handled very well (or, if not "tension", her massive crush on Gordon at least). Subtle, but telling cues in her voice/facial animations. Unfortunately, since Gordon's a silent FPS protagonist, I'm not sure where they'll be able take it in HL3, but here's hoping for something.
