I've gotten more into the old rpgs as of late, but I'm a huge elder scrolls fan, daggerfall is something I really need to get back to, i keep hoping some day daggerdall II will be made but with the whole sprite graphics preserved, more resources poured into the gameplay and world. Seriously games like heretic and heretic 2 looked alright in the sprite design, I can only imagine the potential if todays budgets were put behind such a game today.

Anyeays lately my rpg fix comes prescribed as dwarf fortress adventure mode.

Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age are hands down my favourite RPGs.

Followed by (in no particular order):
- Final Fantasy X
- Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core
- Fallout 3
- Morrowind

I never know what game to choose for these topics.

For open world games I would probably pick Skyrim due to all of the hours of enjoyment I have gotten out of it and the fact that I can nearly always go back to it and enjoy making a new character and just roleplaying as that character, choosing what quests I do and where I go. I love being able to just do whatever I want in that game.
Thanks to mods it is also one of my favourite power fantasy games since I can just make a character who can do whatever the hell they want due to how incredibly OP they are.

However for a more focused RPG, the main game that comes to mind is Dragon Age. It's probably just because im playing through Origins again now but I haven't played any of the really old RPGs people usually mention and thinking about the word RPG makes me think of Dragon age.

Mass Effect 1 & 2.
Dragon Age: Origins.
Fable II (to a lesser extent III).
Rise of the Argonauts.
Alpha Protocol.
Fallout 3/New Vegas.
Oblivion.
Borderlands 1 & 2.
Knights Of The Old Republic.
The Witcher II.
Deathspank.

Couldn't settle on just one. There are
probably a few more from PS1 & 2 era but
can't remember them.

Dragon Age: Origins. A game with about 80 hours of content wrapped into one. It isn't perfect by any means, but it a damn good ride. That said, I haven't really played too many RPGs other than Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Sure, I have dabbled, but the only other game that I do have is Baldur's Gate, but I never get around to actually playing it.

Persona 4 is my favorite, no question. I don't even have to say why, there are a million and one topics about why Persona 4 is awesome.

Second place goes to the Pokemon series in general, but Black and White specifically. Unova was a great region, the new mons in this region are great, the story is the best it's ever been, and even with the (technically) superior X and Y out, I feel like B&W are still the best offerings in the Pokemon series.

I don't feel like choosing a specific third, but here are a few more:

Fallout: New Vegas
Kingdom Hearts
Final Fantasy X
World of Warcraft
The World Ends With You
Freedom Force
South Park: Stick of Truth
Borderlands

Xenogears!! (ps1 classic)

and all its subseqent multiversal spirit-sequals: Xenosaga (1-3) and Xenoblade Chronicles (which i'm currently going playing through... and loving it!)

Also Parasite Eve (1, 2, and 3rd Birthday) but i felt Xenogears was more classic RPG :D

Mass Effect - great writing and well crafted world, you get to role play your character, cinematic feel, emotionally engaing, meaningful choice and consquence that carries over through the series.

EDIT: Beautiful visuals, cool design, superb voice acting, great music, epic epicness and a little dose of hard sc-fi.

Probably Suikoden II, with FFVI and Shining Force (pure nostalgia for this one) as the runner ups.

Though a reason release on Steam of a 10 year old PSP game, The Legend of Heroes: Trail in the Sky is threatening to bump one of those out. Considering it's released as 'chapter' 1 of 3 then taking the 3 parts of a whole it could end up as my favourite all time.

God so many to consider for different reasons.

In terms of great rpg series I'll start with something more modern, Mass Effect. Yes the third had an ending more disappointing than my son, but in terms of memorable characters and story moments Mass Effect as a series has stuck with me more so than most other things. If I ever play through the third again I'll just let myself get shot by Marauder Shields, then promptly turn the game off and resume my drinking.

Another honorable Bioware mention is Baldur's Gate II which showed the same character driven writing chops that the Mass Effect universe had. It was also the first DnD RPG I found (other than the dark sun series of yore) that actually handled tactically like the tabletop game. It was nice to play a game where different spell options and tactics had tradeoffs and specialized utilities. The problem with the streamlined trend of more modern RPG's is it took the puzzle aspect out of combat in exchange for reflex response. Often times when you got owned in BGII it really had to do with the fact that you didn't plan out how to take on your enemy and didn't use all the tools at your disposal in the right way. Nowadays in most games you get owned because you didn't spam enough fireballs or hit x fast enough.

Moving off the Bioware bandwagon one of my early console favorites from the 16 bit era was Chrono Trigger. Probably the best JRPG ever made. It featured a well made turn based battle system, excellent music and sound design, great pixel art and memorable characters, and of course a lot of fun endings. Remember when RPG endings could be fun and colorful instead of grim for the sake of drama? It is probably Square's crowning achievement in the 16bit era.

Another Square product I thoroughly enjoyed was Parasite Eve. It was a taut little game with a decent shell of an action based battle system, some fun gun customization and an interesting pot boiler of a story. I really wished they left it at that rather than making a sequel that seemed an attempt to turn Parasite Eve from a more serious scifi horror game to a schlocky resident evil clone. I think it even had tank controls.

My absolute favorite would be Pokemon Black. It gets a lot of flak, but I love just about everything about it. Many of my favorite Pokemon are from that generation, the characters and story are arguably the best in the series, and the music is awesome.

Other favorites would include the first two Paper Mario games. Those are masterpieces to me for many reasons. For traditional JRPGs, it would have to be Golden Sun and Golden Sun: Lost Age.

I could write an essay for why I like all of these really, I just feel to lazy to so at the moment.

Planescape Torment

Honourable mentions to Baldur's Gate, Morrowind, KOTOR, Mass Effect, Witcher, Exile/Avernum.

And there are several widely-praised RPGs I still have to play - Arcanum and Vampires the Maqsquerade being the biggest ones.

More people then him like it. You would be surprised how many of us there are. Hidden in plain sight. One by one, replacing others with more of us. Waiting for our time to come. And you will never be able to tell who is infected until we enact the Awesome Button protocol.

And then you will know. You will all know.
