Company of heroes, any rts that can realisticly use cover and suppression fire as that game deserves credit. If only I could find a way to get rid of the population limit, are there any mods out there for it?

Warcraft II was the first game PC game I ever bought, so it has a special place in my heart (I read the manual 50 times, they don't make game manuals like that anymore). I also like the Myth games because they were so gory and brutal (great manuals, again). Warcraft III was great on the first run-through, but the second play showed that it was waaaay too scripted, it didn't feel like I was actually doing anything.

The Total War games are all awesome, but they are almost in their own category of RTS.

Dawn of War, hands down, mainly because I love the 40k universe but the game itself is very good. Although it would be better if some of the races were done right and relic didnt keep bilking us for money with expansion packs.
I thought it was finished now that there's nine races but I hear tale that the expansion madness will start again with DoW2 -.-
as long as dow2 has tyranids then relic can stick there expansion packs up there arse.
also total annihaltion the origanal supreme commander there is a free rts engine caled spring that is being used to update TA to the moderne world and it is looking might fine

Very Glad to see someone mention Populous, that game was so very fun.
Urm, while it isn't the best RTS ever; the first C & C game is genius: it was the first RTS I ever saw and it burned itself onto my mind. There was something about it that put RTS games as a whole into my circle of Love. Even when playing other games (Usually FPS's) I still, from time to time, say "That was left handed" In the most gruff and overtly hetrosexual "commando" voice i can manage. (Oh and the sound of an obelisk of light "warming up", and the following scream from the lone soldier hit by it, still finds its way into my dreams
Recently, i'll have to say DoW but I doubt it will remain with me long... Its a fine game and i've enjoyed many an afternoon playing it, but it lacks that something that would make me truly worship it.

Last thought, i've seen supreme commander mentioned afew times in this thread and would like to ask: How Awesome is it? I eagerly anticipated its arrival, gleefully remarking it would be a new kind of RTS, then failed to purchase it or even look into it a great deal. This is a wrong I would like to right. Thanks in advance.

it is the best, the Supreme Commander has an O.K. map editor (its a hell of a lot simpler than the Starcraft or HL2 one). Ive also used the Galactic Battlegrounds map editor which is really similar. I think its because you dont use decals and you stay in one land type.

Classic TA is still awesome so many years on. Sorry, but SupCom just can't live up to it.

World in Conflict gets a mention too for finally being an RTS that I can play online. Doing away with the traditional bases and resorces system 'fixed' the problems I had. The last time I tried an RTS multiplayer before WiC was a 6 player LAN game of C&C Generals. One guys army of demotrucks and mobs, and another guy with 14 scud storms, really no fun. Resorce management sucks for multiplayer playability.

I would have to say blizzard's rts are my favorites, because of the story. but I also like total war, aoe, and tiberium wars
P.S.
I would have to say that starcraft 2 is my most anticipated rts in the near future.

Defcon has a free demo available for download. It's pretty underwhelming.

Heh, Total Annihilation: Kingdoms. I never played it, but I did pick it up in a jewelcase for $0.75. At that price, it's a crime not to buy it.

1. Medieval II total war (for combat and campaign)
2. Company of Heroes. (great graphics and effects, also very fun.)
3. LOTR Battle For Middle Earth II. (I don't know it's just damn fun)

C&C
my reasons
-AMAZINGLY balanced sides (especially RA2, even with yuri in the mix)
-diverse factions
-RA subfactions (i.e. countries)
-power plants
-great story
-actually decent live action fmvs
- most importantly the music. nuff said

I once saw TA in a bargain bin thought of buying it but didn't, I hadn't even heard of it back then though *crys*
