Alisia Dragoon on the megadrive. Awesome music, interesting level and monster design, fairly fancy game-play for it's day and it had pet dragons in it.

Either Megaman X or Megaman 7. Did anyone else play Sunset Riders on Genesis (or SNES)? Me and my cousin played that non-stop when we were kids.
Yoshi's Story. Or Kirby's Return to Dreamland. Or Kirby 64. Or Sonic/Sonic 2/Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Or the 'Classic' stages from Sonic Generations.
But I think I should go with Yoshi's Story, because it seems like nobody else remembers it was a thing that existed.

I'd have to go with Yoshi's Island. Great art style, innovative gameplay, great atmosphere, memorable as all hell and just plain fun.
Rayman Origins and Donkey Kong Country Returns are two modern games that come very, very close though.

Rayman Origins. I love the Rayman series, but never really liked the first one--as such, I could never list it as my favorite 2D platformer. Then Origins came along, did what the first Rayman did but better, and it now ranks among my favorite games in general--when it isn't completely frustrating, since I'm going for perfect on my first run-through.
Super Meat Boy.
I consider it the ultimate indie game.
The main story has the most perfect difficulty curve I've ever encountered, it has a massive amount of content like a huge array of characters and extra levels, it has a great, colorful art style, an awesome soundtrack that stands completely on its own, and to top it all off it has perfect precise controls and fun, fast paced gameplay.
There's very little I can find wrong with it.

Super Mario World. First video game I ever played, and the one that made me a gamer. Close second would be the original Donkey Kong Country.

If you ask me next week i'ld probably give a different answer, but for now i'll say New Zealand Story. Since most folk won't know what i'm talking about it's by Taito who made Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands, everyone tends to know about those 2 but forget about this game.
Great spike trap platforming, fantastic level design with many hidden warps, you can fly & swim and when you lose your last life you sometimes go to the Heaven stage in hopes to get another life.
Heres a vid of it, the player is using warps rather than progressing though the game normally, it does show off the gameplay to good effect though.
