Chrono Trigger/FF6/FF1/Vagrant Story for Square
Soul Blazer/Illusion of Gaia for Enix
Xenogears takes honorable mention as the most epic, overly ambitious, freaking long as hell RPG of the day. The second disc being a cop out of course.
Parasite Eve was a great original IP that just went nowhere like Vagrant Story. I recall loving the first game, and renting the second. The second game I used the bayonette almost exclusively and still ran out of ammo on bosses. The third game is on cellphones though, much like FF4 TAY.
And to anyone that loved chrono cross, I wonder what game I was playing. Rarely do I play a game to completion with multiple endings and decide to sell it rather than see more than 2 of them. The game has over 40 playable characters, much like Warriors Orochi (dynasty/samurai warriors mashup), only with less than half the personality or character development. Much like Suikoden they have you collect them pokemon style, requiring 3 playthroughs to *Catch em all*. Each and every one with one or two exceptions (Kid and Serge) make you wish you were playing Tingle's Rosy Rupee Land as the idea of an entire game with Tingle seems like a better use of my time. Most have random accents which border on unreadable at times. The battle system was okay.
The plot, which is so full of holes and deus ex machina (almost literally) lacks any kind of pacing and is (at least for me admittedly) extremely hard to follow at times. It makes Memento, Donnie Darko, and The Attic Expeditions (all good movies) look absolutely transparant in comparison.
Plus the added FU they give to the cast of Chrono Trigger was lame, and the fact that the ending of the DS port of CT sets up the whole thing with Schala and Lucca is dissappointing.
