2 years of fencing and dueling instruction have biased me to the rapier and dirk. Not great vs some others, but with it's own advantages.

Some more love for a good old fashioned hand ax or tomahawk from me. Damn things are nearly perfect for nearly any close quarters situation and it can double as a tool in a post apocalyptic world as well. I like my toys to have a combination of utility and flexibility. Swords and spears are too large and hard to hide, maces are too heavy and no one wears anti cutting armour any more. Give me a hatchet any day.

I am rather fond of glaives, not entirely sure why they just seem badass to me.

On the other end of the spectrum, I really like the idea of using a wooden baseball bat as a weapon, I just feel like it would be really satisfying weapon to use.

The Force, ideally with a complimentary lightsaber, but if we have to pick just one, totally The Force. Because when you can punch someone in the face from the other side of a football field, melee becomes a whole lot more fun.

I usually enjoy most melee weapons that are not insanely big like most fantasy game weapons. Although they are very rarely used in games I love any kind of spear/staff weapon, if it's a stick with something on the end then I like it. Although they probably weigh too much to use in real life I love spears that have the stick part made out of metal, same with halberds. Although they would realistically be used for poking the enemy I enjoy seeing them used in large sweeping motions with lots of spinning and use of the pole for blocking.

For functionality I usually prefer something that can be used with a shield, bastard swords are usually my favourite as they can also be wielded using both hands, it was the bastard sword that I used to finish Dark souls 2. Though I have a special place in my heart for the Black knight halberd and other halberds similar to it, I loved seeing Whitebeard use one in One piece but I don't know the name of that type of halberd.

Though I've also started to enjoy melee weapons that have been merged with guns. I've watched RWBY recently and really enjoy Ruby's Sniper Scythe and Yan's shotgun fists. Playing Fallout: New Vegas as an unarmed character made me appreciate the ballistic fist even more, there is just something so satisfying about using them in melee. Warframe has just added a shotgun/sword hybrid as well and being someone who primarily uses melee in it I am looing forward to unlocking it and going crazy.

If dark souls has taught me anything, Great swords are the way forward in melee, a decent shield and a secondary weapon of a bow.
Except that kind of combo is impossible outside of Dark Souls. Sure, you can swing a greatsword one handed, they're light (around 3kg/6lbs), but after each swing, be it hit or miss, you'd make yourself open and vulnerable to any attack cause it'd have taken you too long to pick up the sword from the ground and back on your shoulder.

It's a naginata - a Japanese polearm (strangely, classified as a sword).

Shield, with either a long sword or bearded axe, depending on the adversary, it's versatility and viability in both single combat, group skirmishes and larger battles in both simple and genius.

Bring a shield, your comrades will be grateful!

Something about a cleaver sings to me. I like how they look, kinda just like a big fat razor. Pretty happy you can dual wield cleavers in Warframe, though I can't think of any other game off the top of my head unless it involves cooking.

The halberd!

I was a little kid when I first saw one, and I fell in love with it.

I've always liked spears, and a halberd is a spear with an AXE on the end of it.
First time I got a halberd in a game I mis-read it as Hell Beard. I was immediately sold.

Captcha: Tesla oil
Very cool, not particularly a melee weapon though (disregarding stun batons / cattle prods)

The under-used & under-appreciated spear. It really annoys me that more games don't use them. I picked up Kingdoms of Amalur this weekend for 3 whole dollars(worth it by the way) & I see all the baddies & npcs running around stabbing things & me with spears, but I can't use them... Fuck you game, fuck you.

That's not a glaive, this is a glaive:
A glaive
Sigh, here we go again...

Yes, I know. My Skyrim install has both the regular glaives and the warglaives. I use that name because more people will know what it is; less confusing than say, "Faeblades" (from Amalur).

Oh, but Faeblades are more fun to use. :D

IRL, I like my telescopic baton.

In games, it depends on my character type. In D&D my personal favorite is the halberd, because having a weapon with Reach makes combat so much more dynamic and fun, coupled with Combat Reflexes.

Generally though I like blunt weapons in most cases, I have this thing for characters who have the ability to destroy structures, I dunno, just call it the latent Earthbender in me, I like seeing stuff get smashed. xD

Ah I see, thank you.

OT: Someone else mentioned Kingdoms of Amulaur and man that game was such a tease. Enemies used spears but you could never get them yourself, one of the plot points involved getting a legendary spear so that you could defeat a demon lord but you never got to use it.

This thread actually makes me want to play Dark souls 2 again just to try and do a playthrough using only spears and halberds ;)

Dark souls gets a lot of praise for many different things but it really deserves more for the huge amount of weapon variety it has compared to most games which just give you a sword, an axe and maybe a hammer or mace.

There is nothing quite so violently majestic as the dance of a true swordmaster. No other weapon is more versatile, graceful and independent. Complex, elegant, deadly... Beautiful; it's like art.

My ideal weapon is a smaller than average flamberge. Long range, balanced between deft flourishing and striking power. I can control the fight from outside, overwhelm timid opponents, and exploit the mistakes of bolder ones.

I like the versatiliy of a good thrusting and slashing blade like the bastard sword which you can use single-handed or two-handed quite easily. Halberds have also appealed to me recently too also due to their versatily but also their range. In regards to Dark Souls 2 - I wish the twinblade was better as I love its moveset.

Like the wrench in the first Bioshock. Best. Melee weapon. Ever.
Naw man, if you are going to go that route, you have to go oldschool. I'm all about that crowbar, bout that crowbar, bout that crowbar. No Trouble.

I noticed a lot of people saying spears and honestly to me their biggest benefit is mass production and simple training which means in Medieval 2 Total War most of the early battles will be between spearmen. As a weapon to use myself they seldom do enough damage to warrant using them. Last game I can think of in which I used one was Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Sure it's got reach but I needed something quicker as I began to get surrounded.

Definitely a basket-hilt broadsword for me though the only games that get weapons close to them are ones with cutlasses while I prefer a longer blade

Give me a Bastard Sword or a Two-Handed Sword any day. I prefer to send my flying away AND with a few less limbs. Also, if you have enough armor, you can shrug off a kataner or a regular longsword. Something heavier? That you HAVE to notice.

Halberds are cool too.
