What are your favorite videogame types and why?

I'll go first, in no particular order,

Dungeon crawlers. OK I'm completely willing to admit that a lot of these games is just skinner box manipulation. But, damn it, I still love them. There's something about killing hordes of enemies single handedly, and getting the shiniest loot, that draws me to them. Examples:Diablo, Dungeon Siege, Torchlight, Titan Quest.

Role Playing Games. Both the Japanese and Western Styles. Though JRPGs can get a bit style over substance, and WRPGs can be a bit aimless and diffuse. Despite these faults, RPGs generally offer good story and customization. And some of the skinner box stuff from the previous category. Examples:Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Mass effect, Elder Scrolls.

Strategy games. Both Real time and Turn based. Probably the oldest Genre of Video game sense it dates back to old board games like Chess or Go. I like games that let me use my mind, which I find most games don't. To beat your opponent from wits alone (and in real time reflexes) is an experience like no other. Also I'll include SRPGs here as a combination of this and the previous type. Examples:Romance of the three kingdoms, Starcraft.

Puzzle games. Both the Tetris and Professor Layton style. These games also have you work your mind. Though I'd say the tetris style have more replay value as when you beat all the puzzles in a puzzle game there's not much left to do. Examples: Tetris, Professor Layton.

Falling out of love with the RPG genre lately. Both J&W. WRPGs are becoming shallow and story-focused, with over-simplified gameplay.

JRPGs are becoming too much about grinding, and multiple endings with ridiculous requirements for the good endings. An an ABUNDANCE of Guide Dang It [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GuideDangIt].

So, my favorite genre is hack-n-slash now. Like Bayonetta, God of War, etc.

Style and substance in gameplay. Style, usually no substance in story. But I don't mind a shitty story.

I have lots of fun with platformers if they're REALLY GOOD (i.e. Super Mario Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Super Meat Boy), but lately I have been attracted to first-person games. I've been enjoying Halo 1, Half-Life is interesting, and in my opinion, Portal is the most perfectly made game since Space Invaders.

Meh, old school CRPG's have been interesting me lately, but I'll play a bit of everything I suppose.

Survival horror. I love being scared, and they tend to have darker themes, which is something I like. I'm not a "feel good" kinda guy.

That's quite the list. I like games in other catagories than the ones I listed, those are just my favorite game types. Maybe try to narrow it down a bit and give some reasons.

Lets go through this...

The easiest type of game for me to love remains the 3D Platformer. They may not make my all-time top 5, but I am very forgiving of them. I love platforming puzzles, and most of them have some quirky and lovable worlds.

RPGs are more prominent among my all-time favorites, but a poorly done RPG will feel like a chore. I've begun to get into JRPGs lately as well.

Whatever you call games like Uncharted and Enslaved are up there as well for me. Action Adventure?

But the single greatest game type for me? Zelda (I'm bad at picking what genre something is in. What is this? Adventure, Action, Puzzle, Hookshot Joyfest)

The Rest:

Sandbox games are still good to me, but I can't play them too often (the genre needs some innovation in gameplay). Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed are exemptions in that I can play them often because they have unique and well-done gameplay and settings.

Sports...I play baseball games. I'm not interested any other sport except for tennis and golf. I will play Wii Tennis and Golf though with friends.

Point and click adventures: I enjoy the rare one.

I just played Bayonetta and loved it. I've played the first two (HD versions) God of War games and am very split on them. I love the boss fights, overall combat, and the ridiculous spectacle of it (some amazing set pieces), but hate the platforming and puzzles in it (which is a substantial amount of gameplay). Other one's have felt so-so to me. So I'm split there.

I'm profoundly horrible at Fighting games, but they are still fun to me.

I don't hate 2D platformers, but they kind of reached their Zenith for me (and I'm not even a retro gamer) with Super Mario Brothers 3. I can enjoy other ones, but I'd rather just play SMB3 again.

Music games are still fun, but I don't buy them. If I go to someone's place and they have one, I might jam out.

This is getting too long...

The only genres I can say I really don't like are First Person Shooters and Horror. It's just the whole first-person perspective that I hate. I didn't like it in Oblivion, but I dealt with it. I spent 80% of the time in New Vegas in third person. I like Team Fortress 2 (though I've kind of gotten tired of it, haven't played in a month or two), but nothing else in the FPS genre.

As for horror, that's just because things like psychological horror leave me feeling very disturbed and depressed, and pop-out-at-you scares give me so much anxiety that it becomes overwhelming and I cannot enjoy the game.

I was doing a partly sarcastic post because I couldn't find a 'real' good list of the 'game types'.

Also, I enjoy just about EVERY video game type - which is why I have so many unfinished games.

My favorite type would have to be FPSs. What can I say? I just really like playing them.

I also really like Strategy games, even though I'm not very good at them.

I've loved RPGs since I was a little kid. Lunar and Super Mario Legend of the Seven Stars will do that to a child.

Though in college, I hardly find the time. I own Infinate Undiscovery, Persona 3 and 4, Resonance of Fate, Legend of Dragoon, Baten Kaitos Origins, and maybe a few more that I own but have either not started, or only played a few hours of it. (Legend of Dragoon is the only one in that list that has been started.)

I still always love action games, especially if they actually feel like an adventure. Thank you Lost Kingdoms 2 and Quest 64, for raising the bar higher than almost any other game seems to be achieving for me. It doesn't have to be an epic story, but a couple of secrets in a very nice world that encourages exploration, though isn't even 100th the size of red dead, and I guess thats what I'm looking for. Borderlands couldn't do it because it wasn't very... well... varied.

In all seriousness, I'm a sucker for a good 4X game.

I've lost days in GalCiv2: Endless Universe.

RPG's because I like good stories. Shooters because I like Halo and Perfect Dark. Sandbox because I like exploring. And hack n slash because Bayonetta is one of the best games ever.
