Blackadder and Father Ted have to be the greatest comedy shows ever.
Ali G, Bo Selecta and Little Britain are also hilarious.
Coupling seasons 1,2 and 3 were great but the 4th series sucked so bad.

edited as I forgot to mention Monty Python. I shall now punch myself and sit in the corner for an hour.

Well after Arrested Development everything will seem like a step down, and almost everything will seem like a HUGE step down. I have actually been looking for a new comedy show myself, and after trying many, many bad - or just meh - shows, I have found something with a bit of an AD feel to it: Community. It has jumped straight to the top of my comedy watchlist ahead of The Office and 30 Rock, which were the only (current) ones I liked.

Some of the AD feel may come from the fact that Joe and Anthony Russo directed the pilot of both, and from what I have seen in interviews they have had a great impact on the style and tone of the series going forward.

Arrested Development - I followed that show across different time slots and nights and multiple cancellations. It is the best American comedy program I've ever watched.

Peep Show - The epitome of what makes English humor so good, a brilliant classic work of silly genius.

Try the IT Crowd. It's full of witty computer related humor.
This ^^, Archer, Big Bang Theory, Better off Ted, Scrubs, M*A*S*H, Red Dwarf, Futurama, The Guild (web), The Legend of Niel (web), Doraleous and Associates (web), Dead Like Me, Pushing Dasies, 30 Rock.

These are just some of my favorites

EDIT: 3rd Rock From the Sun (John Lithgow is a comedy god)

Easy, along with Community start watching Parks and Recreation and Modern Family.

These are inarguably the best comedies on TV, but be sure to start with Season 2 of Parks because the first season is trash. I didn't watch the first season and started watching the second when I had heard it was a major improvement. It is and I think it and Modern Family can stack up against AD, which is probably the best comedy ever.

The deal with Modern Family is that it feels like a show that's in its fifth season. Not in that it's now stale and losing steam, but because it has the confidence of a long running show yet it's in its first season.

Whatever you do, don't watch Two and a Half Men. It's the worst show on TV unless you 50+ years old or brain dead.

Thank you.
