The PS controllers for me. They just seem to have the perfect weight and size to them for me.

It may be because it's been the controller I've been using for the past decade-and-change, but the playstation controllers are my favorite. Perhaps it's because I like it with the d-pad at the regular thumb position, or because I'm a sucker for symmetry. It's just the size for my hands, too. The DS3 and Sixaxis triggers are a little squishy, but that's fine for me, although they start to squeak with continued usage, which could probably drive some people INSANE.

Saying WASD is best seems silly to me. The mouse part of mouse-and-keyboard is understandable, but the WASD keys themselves are a hack, a best-fit. The W doesn't even line up on most keyboards. Plus there are hundreds of keyboard designs, so what works well on one might suck on another - different keyboards can be more different than the PS and 360 controllers!

I don't like the PS controllers; they feel like they were designed on paper and made without being actually tested. The Wiimote has the best concept, but the 360 has the best ergonomics. My hands just feel right when I'm using a 360 controller. I like that it considers how you use the left and right thumbsticks differently: you need more easier movement on the left and finer control on the right, like a mouse in fact. Too bad for left-handed gamers I guess. Do they make a left-handed version?

Xbox 360.
I can never go back to Ps2 or Ps3 controllers ever again. The trigger placement lets me rest my indexes, and my thumbs dont have to stretch so far to reach each analog. I never had any problem w/ the D-pad either, considered how little its used on consoles today (not including systems w/o analog like the wiimote).

Also, i gotta say, the best thing about those 360 controllers is that they can take some serious punishment before they break. im talking like 'bashed against metal cupholders and then chucked across the room' punishment. lol my black controller actually works better after that, but the place where the front and back meet on the left side is cracked open and if i gently push the analog stick a millimeter to the left (and only the left) then my character will SLOWLY turn left until i move the stick again. I've bashed all but one of my controllers at least once, and only one has ever broken.
maybe i have anger issues, but im working on it...

I think when people say WASD, it's implied they're talking about KB+M as their preferred control scheme in general.

And "ESDF" is supposed to be even better than WASD but I'm always too lazy to reconfigure my games :]:[
I'm tempted to use a "UHJK" configuration now.

It depends on what I'm playing.

Sony's controller is the best controller for fighting games hands down. The X-box loses this one for two reasons. Firstly, both the original and the 360 have VERY clumsy D-pads, and the analog sticks just don't work as well as the pad (if you're gonna use an analog stick for a fighter, it's gotta be an actual analog stick). The Playstation's D-pad works like a charm though, making it very easy to input attacks that require a directional input (especially if you have to roll on the pad). The second reason is that the X-box has analog shoulder buttons. You have to push the buttons in a little bit before they pick-up, where the PS shoulder buttons are near-instant. Unfortunately for the PS controller, though, is that the poor placement of the analog sticks makes the controller less desirable for any game that requires constant use of them. The only reason to use the PS controller, really, is the superior D-pad (which even today, some games are better played with).

Despite it's short-comings for fighting games, however, the X-box controllers were always better for FPS titles (though PC purists will tell you that FPSing on a console is already a sin, if you're gonna do it, the X-box is the lesser of the evils available), especially with the 360. It's convenient placement of the two analog sticks makes it feel very natural to use both for moving and aiming, meanwhile you have 4 buttons available to you for firing and switching weapons at the shoulders, with 4 other utility buttons you need to push less often available at your (or at least my) aiming finger. You can even use the D-pad as 4 extra inputs if you're playing a shooter that actually requires 12 buttons. The Wii-mote is definitely a very close second. It could possibly even be better, though the only First Person title I've played on the Wii so far is Metroid Prime, where the game kinda helps you aim by keeping the target centered on your screen. You still have to aim manually, but keeping the target centered reduces the hassle of circle-strafing, so I'm not sure how the Wii-mote would hold-up with an actual FPS (where Prime is more of a First Person Action game) where the aiming is done 100% by yourself.

As for my favorite controller though, which I'd use on any-other game besides fighters and FPS titles: The Gamecube controller. It has the most ergonomic feel to it, making it the most comfortable to hold for long hours, and I like how it has the larger A-button with the other 3 buttons right next to it. Its only real drawback is that the D-pad can't be used for much more than utility inputs since it's admittedly a bit uncomfortable to use in the long-term.

I've tried EDSF and I have to bend my hand too much to reach the function keys. I got a Belkin Nostromo and that works great but I can't be arssed to set it up for all my games.

No controller has ever really "fit" me. I suppose I would say the PlayStation controller before they decided to add triggers.
Back in my day, we called that an SNES controller.
Not really. PS controllers always had those bits that come down to grip onto. SNES controllers didn't have these, pretty funny to hold these days when I play on it. D-pad on SNES controllers were good though.
I already said Dreamcast didn't I?
