With the newest addition to the series being out now(can't play it, doesn't have a 360 or a PS3), I was just wondering, what have been everyone's favourite games in the series so far and maybe give a reason why with it too.

I suppose I will start off, but I haven't played a majority of them.

(from greatest to least)

Final Fantasy X
Final Fantasy XII
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy VII

Some keypoints on here for me: the only reason that 7 is on the bottom for me at is, I haven't really played it that much, I have the PC version of it that I got for free from a friend a while ago. But from what, I played the keyboard layout was just piss-poor, and I hate the ATB system with a passion.

Also, 12, I think was one of the best JRPGs to date, sure, the main character wasn't that great, but the design, the gameplay (felt like a mix between, Final Fantasy, a bit of Kotor, and an MMO), plus being the only game to have 2 Cids in it(with one of them being evil), really puts it high up on my list.(I don't understand where all the negative feedback for it comes from).

So..what's everyone else's opinion on this??

there you go!
oh you want a reason
8 seemed the most interesting, even if the lead is a bit of a downer. but the junction system worked when i turn 14 and so old enough to understand hot it worked, and on the 3rd playthrough so i understood why i needed it
and i hate 10, mainly the level up system, as eventually everyone could become the same person, destroying all originality. although it might just be because i hate the lead. he spends the first 45 minutes going on about how great he is. auron is cool though!
the rest are just sort of in between.

I'll only name the ones i played so far:

(from greatest to least)

X
VIII
I
X-2

dropped:
XII
IX

not yet played enough to rate them:
FF6 (aka FF3)
FFXIII
FFII

I couldn't get into the graphicstyle or story of IX and after about an hour of playing i stopped it. And i absolutely hated the battlesystem and licence board of FFXII. I's a shame, because the story of the latter DID seem interesting.

From Best to Worst

Final Fantasy VIII - I like Squall, reminds me of myself at times. Liked the Junction system, and the story. Enjoyed the many secrets and the Card Game is my favourite of all. Some of my favourite Nobuo tracks are on this game too. It just sets the benchmark for all my other FF experiences. I probably clocked more hours on this one than any other too. For some reason more and more these days I see people bash this one, and I don't really know why. Junctioning was pretty unique. Might have been annoying to stock up on some magic to do so, but it worked for me. Probably one of the few complaints about this game from my point of view is the fact that if you train too much, it gets too easy. I recently tried to play through this game until my PS2 scratched the disc to buggery and now I can't get past the end of Disc 1, and got Squall to level 39. Defeating some of the end bosses of Disc 1 in two hits. I know they scale with level but with this game but when you know what abilities to go for with your GF's it does make it too easy as you know what you are preparing for. One of my previous playthroughs I had Squall at level 89 by the end of Disc 2 making the climax battle of Disc 2 a one hitter. Still really enjoyed it though.

Dissidia Final Fantasy - I chose this as my Game of the Year 2009. I probably played this more than any other game in the last year, and still playing it now, 5 months on. I just find it so fast, so furious and such a different style of gaming to anything else i've ever played. True hands down to them for creating a unique fighter. Only flaw was the pretty piss-poor story that came with it. But it was nice to see all the different insults and crap the Villains threw at the Heroes.

Final Fantasy X - On my second playthrough of this right now, defeating all the dark aeons. While the main storyline is much shorter then that of 7/8/9, the sidequests really do make up for that. Sphere grid is a interesting change from levels, but wouldn't want it to replace levels forever. The love story also got my hooked here, and the ending reduced me to tears. Being one of two times the FF series has done this. I only wish that the music was a bit better else I would have put this at No.1.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance - Another GBA one I bought. Not part of the main series but still a fantastic buy. I've probably clocked in as many hours playing this as FFX. The job system in this is what kept me hooked, and some of the most tactical battles i've ever had were in this game.

Final Fantasy - I didn't get the honour of playing the original NES version. I tried but I just couldn't focus with those graphics. I eventually got it on the GBA in the 'Dawn of Souls' pack with FFII and really enjoyed this game. Especially since I could create my own party. I do regret picking the Monk now though, but I still feel really good about defeating the original game. Chaos is one of the better fights i've had in the entire series.

Final Fantasy VII - Don't take this wrong for being so down the list, just I far more enjoyed the others than this. It's a good game, it's story is unique and it has one of the best mind-fucks of all time. (Took me two run-throughs to fully understand the Cloud/Zack relationship.) Sephiroth is too highly rated imho, especially since you only see him properly twice in the game (All the other times it is Jenova).

Final Fantasy IX - Zidane is probably by far my favourite lead, and like Squall reminds me of myself, how I help people with no reason. While a great game and a homage to the old times, I feel this lacks because out of the 8 characters, the game only really revolves around the first 4, with Freya, Eiko, Quina and Amarant thrown in just for a bit of flavour and to serve to help the back stories of Zidane and Dagger. You can probably take Quina out entirely and it wouldn't change any aspect of the game. Kuja didn't feel like a threat to me. Didn't give me that feeling of "oh dear, this is REALLY bad".

Final Fantasy VI - Kefka Palazzo. One of my favourite villains of all time. The music to this game is probably my favourite. Dancing Mad, Darkness and Starlight, Terra, even the battle music. All fantastic pieces by Nobuo. While this is the one I am currently playing through, I feel the game lacks due to it's main cast, which is far too vast for me to really understand what is going on. Kefka got his reputation of being more of a badass for me than any other villain in the series after he actually does the deed every Final Fantasy tries to stop. I'm now in the second part of the game, and aim to finish off the Clown Prince of Darkness. Maybe its because i've not finished it yet that I am still to pass proper judgement. I listened to the music to this game long before I played it, and the Opera scene reduced me to tears probably just because I listened to the orchestral version a lot, and then realised "oh my god, I finally get to see the Opera in-game!". It's not a very emotional scene either, it was just one of those most anticipated moments where you really wanted to see something. That or I am bat-shit insane.

Final Fantasy XII - One of the three I own that i've not completed. The Gambit system is one thing I wish more games had. The ability to tell your two AI teammates what to do in any situation. Even in the early point in the game, I had them scripted to act like Healers/Tanks/DPS. While this took away things to do from me, in the field shaped like an MMO (and I was a pretty big WoW fan at the time of playing this) it felt like instead of controlling one member of the raid, I could control all 40 and if mistakes happen they were my fault instead of others. Unfortunately, the story lacked. I couldn't connect with any character, while I did find Balthier rather fun to listen to. I eventually stopped playing at some point but I might go back to it just to tick it off my checklist.

Final Fantasy X-2 - I had honestly forgotten about this one until I saw it in a previous post. It was just so... unrewarding. Final Fantasy X was amazing and then... why? Why do you taint it. I almost wished that I could ignore this atrocity completely. Oh fair enough, I did complete it, I did not get the 'true' ending and probably never will, but still regard it as a horrible 'sequel' to X. Reason: The Powerpuff Girls and their 'disaster-riffic' story which gave you a Machina as your big bad, tried to make it sound all-powerful and destructive only to have the thing beaten in 5 minutes by my team and then the final boss to be defeated in 3. Yu Yevon was defeated in twenty seconds to be fair, just because they didn't give him any more hit points after you got Break Damage Limit weapons but this game, I hardly trained and never found anything challenging.

Final Fantasy II - The only final fantasy I own which I almost refuse to play. Part of the Dawn of Souls pack it almost sent me into a pure rage. I simply just can't play this game. The weapon skill thing, the not knowing where to go, the walking across bridge from starting area and getting killed by level 30 monster. I don't want to resort to a guide to get past the first part of the game. I really don't. So, it stays on the shelf until I have the nerve to try it again.

Never played but will probably move on to next: Final Fantasy IV
Never played: Final Fantasy III, Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy V, Final Fantasy XIII (need £££)

I loved XII I loved everything about it, and I don't care what people say, so there ;-) I loved the battle system, the license board, the story, I liked the characters (particularly Basch) and Ivalice is a beautiful place to explore. There is a very real sense of freedom and the way the sidequests occur make it feel more non linear than it is!
I also like X despite some pretty cheesy characters and a plot thinner than most it is still a fun game with again, lots of great environments.
I am enjoying XIII so far but not loving the areas so much (that said, I have only played for about 10 hours)
I don't dislike any FF game unless you are counting Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube *frowns*
And probably X-2 which was shallow and not very entertaining, imo.

From best to worse.

VI - One of the best games ever. Awesome 'opera' story, cool characters.
IV - Was good as well.
X - I seriously dislike Tidus, but apart from that I loved the game.
VIII - Enjoyed it, cast wasn't that great though and I disliked the whole magic junction system.
IX - I liked those whole events that'd put you in the shoes of other characters (for the first time since VI), so you'd not always play just the main.
VII - Not that good. All the Cloud and Sephiroth fanboys/girls annoy me to no end.
X-2 - BLEEEEEEERGH.

Haven't played XII or XIII yet.

Assuming Tactics counts, its on top for me. If not, ignore it then.

1) Tactics - I just love the plot and how its handled.
2) VI - By far the characters make this great. And Kefka is an amazing villian.
3) IV - Same as above, but on a lesser scale.
4) X - Combat system, as well as some characters. Though Tidus was annoying
5) VIII - Interesting concept, poor execution. Points for effort.
6) XII - Too much in the wrong place for me. Great concept, but Vaan shouldn't have been the lead, Ashe should have been killed for some things, Larsa needed to stay. Needed more Rosarians.
7) VII - I just don't like most of the characters, and thus it doesn't have much effect on me.
8) I - Classic RPG, but dated. Not bad, but not too memorable.
9) III - Not a fan of the game at all. Just got bored of it for lack of interest.
10) II - Hated the system, and thus never got far.

I haven't played most of them but here goes in a general scale of best to worst:

VI: I loved the story, the characters, Ultros and all the humor, Kefka and awesome ATB system.

IV, Note this is going off the DS version: An excellent if cliched story by modern standards and a great cast with that excellent ATB system I love. It also has a decent challenge.

XI, Tied with IV may move up if I actually beat it: The Humor her is great, the skill system is awesome, along with the aforementioned ATB system, and it has Kuja the sexiest man alive. Also as a side not it has aged fairly well just saying.

III DS: I like it for it's old school sensibilities and job system everything else is ok.

VII/XII:Haven't played long enough to go wither way on them.

This list has no set order except for maybe FF6 other than that this will probably change when I play through XIII or finish another FF.

I've been playing Final Fantasy for quite a while and my favourites from greatest to least are:

Final Fantasy IX - Great detail all round, in terms of graphics, music and gameplay. Too bad it doesn't get the praise it deserves.

Final Fantasy VI - Best 2D FF ever.

Final Fantasy VII - It's a really weird game, and I get the feeling that this was the game VI wanted to be if only it could render 3D graphics and wanted to swap the steampunk setting for a skiffy one instead.

Final Fantasy X - This is the most recent FF I've replayed and in retrospect the voice acting wasn't *that* bad... Love the battle system.

Final Fantasy V - The first FF I managed to beat (played the fan translation way back when). Still has one of the best overworld themes in any FF.

Final Fantasy II - This gets a lot of slack but I love it anyway because I actually owned a Japanese NES cart of FFI + FFII and I enjoyed FFII the most. Damaging your allies in battle to level up faster was ridiculous but ultimately lotsa fun.

Final Fantasy IV - I played this after I played FFVI so I felt it was inferior in many ways. The dodgy English translation was just the tip of the iceberg. Still, I did play it till the end.

Final Fantasy VIII - Boo to monsters levelling up with you. What's up with that, Square?

Final Fantasy I - Didn't like it when I first played it on the NES all those years ago, and still don't. Love Matoya's Cave theme though.

Final Fantasy XI - Played this for about three months then gave up. Firstly, I hated the fact that I had to play it WITH OTHER PEOPLE to advance, and secondly, the monthly fee. I guess MMOs just don't float my boat.

Haven't played FFX-2 or FFXII because I lacked a PS2 when those games came out and I haven't felt like playing FF3 even though I have the DS version lying around somewhere.

Am really hyped up about FFXIII though and hope to buy a PS3 soon to enjoy it with.

Best to Worst:

8

I loved the whole "leveling" with you thing. And the junction system. And the card game!

5

I loved the job system. Best job system ever.

13

Maybe it just because I'm playing it now, but I love the focus on combat. No silly walking around talking to dumb as nails NPCs.

9

Quina. Vivi.

10

Loved the combat, liked the story, loved the music, voices were okay for a first run.

4

Best plot in the series, imo. The first to go all "melodramatic", and the one that pulled it off the best.

12
Liked everything but the license board. The license board suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked.

7

An over-rated games, still good, but nostalgia is a *****. Especially this this is many peoples first RPG.

6

Looooooooooooooooooooved Kefka.

X-2

Great job on combat. Reminded me of 5...Terrible, terrible story.

2

The keyword system thing was fun, if misused.

3

Precursor to 5, introduced jobs. Didn't work nearly as well.

1

The original...sadly...gets this low on the billing.

11

MMO...ugh.....................

IV, V, XI, X-2, XII, and XIII.

VII and X are my least favourite, because although I liked VII at the time, I think it's one of the weakest battle/progression systems in the game, because none of the characters feel unique beyond their limit break, and X is just emo-Grandia.

Its all about VI and IX baby!

(Never could get into 7 or 8, 1 and 2 are a bit boring, never played 5 or 4, and 3 is pretty fun on the NES but again, no where near as great as those two!)

Kefka is the greatest villain of all time, and Zidane is such an awesome protagonist, (I love Vivi and Steiner too! :D).

Admittedly I have yet to play them all, so here's a list of the ones I have, in order of best to worst.

VII
VI
X
XIII
IV
XII
I
II

I loved VII, VI, X, and XIII. Absolutely loved them. The hierarchy of them is kind of in dispute at the moment, since I have yet to beat XIII (35 hours in) and just recently finished VI. XIII may end up above X, and VI may actually beat out VII.

IV was pretty good. I liked everything about it, it just didn't stick out to me like the others did. And it had an annoying habit of being incapable of accepting permanent character death: only two characters out of the many that died were permanently gone. One of them jumped out of an airship with an active bomb in his hand and exploded to destroy a pursuing airship. Yeah, he was found in the rubble and nursed back to health, and can randomly be found near the end of the game. Seriously.

I didn't hate XII: I liked the battle system, and it was easily the second most graphically beautiful game on the PS2 (second to Okami, which pretty much wins best graphics for the history of everything). But the story was ultimately a let-down, with an epic and intriguing political plot backed up by barely-developed characters and very little personal connection to the story. Especially once playing VI and X, I realized just how much of a weakness that was: Final Fantasy is at its best when the story is an epic tale driven by its characters. XIII is doing a great job of this so far.

And to the OP, no offense, but hating on VII for the PC controls is absolutely no reason to dislike it. It was originally meant for the PS1, and without the problems the crappy PC port added it was an amazing game.

Oh, and for the record, Nobou Uematsu is the best composer in the history of everything. Just thought I'd say that.
