Martin O'Donnell.

Best known for his work on the Halo soundtrack, I swear no matter what the intended tone, mood and theme he always finds the right instruments and tune and always makes them work.

Nobuo Uematsu, the guy is a fucking genius. The entire soundtrack of FF10 is proof of this.

I was heartbroken to hear that he won't be working in Final Fantasy 13. If he was there, the guys at square probably wouldn't have got wasted and chose Leona Lewis to sing the theme song for FF13. The song they're gonna use is fucking atrocious.

Bring back Nobuo, Square! For the love of all that is spiky-haired, bring him back!

Martin O'Donnel (you can dislike Halo, but the music there is amazing), Harry Gregson-Williams (Sam & Max), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill 2).
P.S. Forgot to mention (saw this here) - Jeremy Soule, his stuff is terrific.

This. Loved Hans Zimmer since forever.

And whoever it was did the music for the Halo games, the music in those games is absolutely amazing.
Edit: Martin O'Donnell.

Actually, FF10 wasn't just Uematsu. It was also Junya Nakano and Masashi Hamauzu. Incidentally...

Incidentally, Masashi Hamauzu is the composer for FF13. Shame about the theme song though...

OT: Although I think that Nobuo Uematsu is technically a better composer, my favourite game composer is Yasunori Mitsuda. Xenogears, Chrono Cross and, of course, Chrono Trigger (which Uematsu also composed for) are some of my favourite soundtracks of all time.

So there is still hope! Thank you, good sir!

I'm a big fan of Uematsu, but my absolute favorite has to be Shoji Meguro; who did the soundtrack for Persona 3. The entire soundtrack of that game was great and the ending theme really tugged at your heartstrings.

Ending Theme: Kimi no Kioku
