Same here, I love (Most) of Mike Patton's works, even his really weird stuff. Except the songs that he makes intentionally annoying (He likes to piss off his audiences far too much).

I have to agree with you there. It's hard to tell if he's cynical and modest, or arrogant and patronizing. Regardless the guy makes some excellent music.

I think he just genuinely likes pissing off the "Hardcore metal" crowd, take Mr. Bungle for instance. The first Mr. bungle album was, more or less, punk/metal and some of the metal crowd liked it and they gathered a respectable fan base. Then they released Disco Volante and all their metal fans thought "WHAT THIS!? NO HARDCOREZ METALZ!! ME ANGRY!!" which hurt their popularity, but I'm sure Patton got a kick out of that. He does a lot of dragging, meandering and annoying songs when he's with Fantomas too, which are just stupid, but that's just a small portion of his songs and it's a joke anyway, so I don't take it to seriously.

However his bands like Peeping Tom, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle, and Faith no More are simply brilliant. The California album of Mr. Bungle is one of my all time favorites.

Yeah I doubt tracks like Desert Search for Techno Allah went down well with that crowd. And then when he went on to doing stuff on California like Pink Cigarette it just riled them up even more. I'm not exactly a staple metal fan so I really enjoyed those parts of his albums. As for Fantomas, it isn't exactly what one would call accessible. For example Delirium Cordia is just one track and on their first album the track names are dates. It's still fantastic stuff but it sort alienates listeners due to lack of coherence which damages accessibility. That being said, it is merely a joke on his part. Director's Cut was great in my opinion, and is my favourite Fantomas album because of the "normal" album feel but also because the tracks maintained the sound of Fantomas but with more substance and structure(If you know what I mean).

I haven't listened to that much Tomahawk (I only own Mit Gas) but what I have I love. As for Peeping Tom it's probably my favourite since California.

This track also serves as a good example of the self-deprecation that pervades the project. When Patton sings "Roll it up and smoke it again/Bottoms up and drink it again/Fix it up and shoot it again/I can't believe I did it again," he is keenly aware of the way the way it sounds for such an avant-garde songwriter as himself to recite perfect rock & roll cliches. His lyrics mock the self-important coolness of the music industry and self-parody his own place in it. The last line of the chorus is a particularly smart addition, painting on still another layer of sarcasm in how it parallels Britney Spears' "Oops...I Did It Again" -- which he quotes directly at the very end of the track. Patton is self-aware: the Britney shout-out shows that he knows this is the closest he's been to writing anything near radio material in 15 years. Simply put, the man understands irony: he knows exactly what he's doing in convincing waify songbird Norah Jones to sing "The truth kinda hurts, don't it motherf*cker?"

He's a genius, albeit a pretentious one. Faith No More don't even need a mention because they are so awesome. I really hope that they get back together, and their recent tour is definitely a good indication.

I only like a handful of Fantomas songs really, mostly his covers of horror movie themes (Cape Fear, The Omen, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) the rest is not terrble but it's like you said, not really substantial music. Just a collection of incoherent noises really. I'm also on the fence about the album he made with some european musician (I think he's norwegian or swedish) named Kaada, it's not bad music it's just a little too mellow. Like surreal elevator music.
