It fizzes. It quenches. And it could also contain fecal bacteria.

Nearly half of the 90 beverages from soda fountain machines in one area in Virginia tested positive for coliform bacteria -- which could indicate possible fecal contamination, according to a study published in the January issue of International Journal of Food Microbiology.

Researchers also detected antibiotic-resistant microbes and E.coli in the soda samples.

"Certainly we come in contact with bacteria all the time," Renee Godard, lead author of the study and professor of biology and environmental studies at Hollins University, a private liberal arts college in Roanoke, Virginia. "It's simply that some bacteria may potentially cause some disease or gastrointestinal distress. One thing we hesitate with is that people get afraid of bacteria. Many of them are benign or helpful, but certainly, I don't want E.coli in my beverage."

Mythbusters found that a toothbrush, kept sealed under a plastic cover, in the kitchen will have traces of "fecal bacteria" on it.

The one in your bathroom is posiviely crawing with the stuff...

"Feces in mah drink?!?!?!?!"
I'll be honest, reading the title got me annoyed.

Makes me wonder if they clean those machines with their butts.

But imagine if they were? That would be a mighty handstand and then maybe a well aimed push off to plug your arse with one of those taps.

I'd like to meet the girl who was limber enough to do that. I'd then have to dump her for being a freak, but that would be one crazy night.

I bet you'd be hard pressed to find something in a McDonald's or any other fast food place that DOESN'T have faecal bacteria.

It's stories like this that make me glad I don't ever order drinks in fast food venues, and that my water bottle has a tortured-path carbon filter in it.

Worse, Brainiac found out that there are more germs on your desk that there are on the toilet seat at an open-air gig like Glastonbury.

Hmmm... so the question is whether this is naturally occuring, impossible to prevent or if some needs to read up on their food hygeine.

I'm guessing if it's traces people just need to wash hands more, make a good scare story though, mention shit and anyone ill listen.

I'm wondering if the bacteria came from a contaminated water source. Cross contamination also makes sense. If someone gets food poisoning from E. Coli it will show up for weeks in the persons feces.

Since they aren't saying what strain of E. Coli it is, I'm guessing it is either the ETEC strain or the EIEC strain since both of those come from contaminated water sources.

Here are links to both strains for any who dare look it up.
