Porn at work is never a good idea, but when you work in a school? It crosses way the fuck into nopeland. These kids shouldn't have been punished. Exposing someone else's wrongdoing is not wrong.

1) Laptop. Who knows when or where he was looking at the "compromising" image.

2) Sharing embarrassing but otherwise innocuous failures is the definition of tattling, which is indeed wrong.

3) High School + Internet = Nothing new was seen by any student. No, not even the sheltered ones.

Should the students have been punished? If they're using cellphones during class - which is banned in almost every school in the USA - then yes.

Should the teacher be spoken to? Yes, he should be warned and given a write up (or equivalent reprimand) for his failure.

1) I don't remember the exact specifics, wasn't it an errant alt tab or something equally small that led to him displaying the porn? If so that implies it wasn't just something he looked up in the privacy of his home last night.

2) A teacher showing kids porn, even accidentally, is pretty serious, actually. A lot of parents have serious hang ups about this stuff. I don't agree with them, but they have a right to raise their kids in accordance with their beliefs. Teachers have to be held to a certain standard, there are lines that they just can't cross and this is one of them. If the kids had stolen his laptop or jumped onto it while he was talking to someone in the hall or something and found it in his history then yeah, he would be in the clear.

3) That depends on waaaaaaaayyyyy to many factors.

Punishing the students for using phones is one thing, punishing them for exposing their teacher is something else entirely. In my school, the punishment for using a phone at class was usually the teacher telling you to stop. At worse, it was having a piece of chalk thrown at you and your phone confiscated until the end of the day.
