Feeling disillusioned about gaming

I am trying not to give out to many personal details so pardon the vagueness of my situation. Two months ago I moved 3000km away from home, I will be moving back there but not until early next year (barring unforeseeable circumstances). This has resulted in me playing a lot more PC and console games than I have in a long time and its made me realize something: I barely like any games anymore.

The majority of my gaming has been in more traditional forms, I play D&D with my friends. Historically I've DMed most often and that's a 15hr a week job with players as experienced as mine. I've really only had time to play video games I thought were great and just assumed that other good games were coming out but I just didn't know about them. I was wrong.

At first I found a few games I liked but played them all to death. Like I said, I've just spent two months away from my friends and have few chances to meet other like minded people here. I have made friends but they are related to what I'm doing here. I've had little better to do than sit at home and game. However in the last two weeks I have not found a single game that has come out in the last 5 years that can hold my interest that I haven't already played to death, on PC or any console.

I'm not really looking for suggestions, I've already looked over a bunch of similar posts in this and other forums for that before I ran out of titles that interest me. What I really want to discuss is that why I think this is the situation in the first place and I think there are two main reasons.

1. I'm a D&D player so I like fantasy RPGs but no video game can come close to table top RPG in terms of giving me the gaming experience that I want let alone a plot and characters I care about. I love Oblivion and Mass Effect but I played those to death years ago and I don't need to again. Don't get me started on MMORPGs, my gf being a WoW player drives me to insanity on a daily basis.

2. Game companies like television and movie studios are always out for a safe buck and I'm tired of the same old crap. It feels like I played the top few games of each genre already (some years ago, others more recently) and everything else are lesser versions of those. Its not like I don't give other games a chance but most cant hold my interest. One of my first posts on this forum was to say I have not been able to enjoy any other RTS games after having played Supreme Commander and its pretty much like this across the board. If I am bored of the best game in a genre and no one else is even matching its level let alone trying anything new whats the point?

I would really like to know what the people here think of this trend. I know I'm not imagining it because I work in an industry that is about selling out to make money. I think gaming becoming more mainstream is killing it for me, the lowest common denominator is mattering to much these days and I get enough of that with my work. Yes I'm an elitist but I've earn it, I'm a writer and I'd have a lot more money than I do now if I was willing to sell out.

There is only one answer: Mods. Use tons of mods. Jack up your Fallout 3 on mods and it'll be like a whole new game.

I suggest you try out some completely different game genres you never even thought of playing before. I did and now I'm a huge fan of point and click Adventures and Stealth games.

I'd suggest every game made by Black Isle, even though you've probably already played them.

The nineties were like a golden age for PC games. We just have to accept that we are living in a silver age now where we don't get great games that satisfy our very specific tastes coming out every other month with new types of games popping up all the time. They cost too much to make and the business men and career salary men take over more every year.

Having said that, if you manage to broaden your tastes by gaming on different platforms and genres then you will still be struggling to keep up with the good games. Have you looked into indie games as well? What about a game like Knights of the Chalice [http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/]?

Maybe try switching to another genre. Or if that doesn't work, jack your RPG with mods. That usually fixes it.

I've felt just like this myself recently :)

Basically what I did was I played all my games and played them all(even ones i would look at and think, nah i cba or i'm not in the mood)

You'll be surprised at how many games you have will give you some more replay value. Also as mentioned experiment with mods :D

I also brought myself a new mouse and speaker system for my PC and it's made me wanna play some more games.

As people have mentioned maybe try new genres? Give games a go you'd not normally play?

I also tried free games from the internet, some of them will help pass some time and maybe put you in the mood for another particular game that you own.

Also maybe go to your local game store and see what cheap games they have under pre-owned? I got Arma for £3.99 the other day and have been playing it since(Admitidly I am a OFP fan anyways but still, its an extra 50 hours of gameplay easily, and will last me until I can afford Arma 2 or OFP2)

I'm gonna drop another vote in for trying genres you'd previously avoided, I had a loathing for FPS games after far too long humouring friends by joining in tedious hours of Halo, Doom, Quake, UT, etc. (Not knocking those games, they're just not 'me', and the hostility grates with me.)

Then I tried TF2 out of curiousity and loved it, and other games such as Bioshock have proved to me just because its partly FPS it's not all just about spawnkilling the new guy and teabagging him for 3 hours.

I'm also struggling terribly with Civ 3 and failing every time on easy, but finding it fascinating, the idea of a game like that being possible to win without just building up your military before your opponent and stomping them into dust. (anyone with Civ 3 tips, feel free to message me, heh).

And again, I never saw the appeal of tower defence, but both Plants vs Zombies and more recently , Defense Grid has shown me they're not all the same.

Gaming became pretty boring and predictable five/six years ago. Publishers don't want to experiment anymore and only fund projects that are safe. That's why I became a retro gamer.

Guess I'm getting to old for mute/supercool Space Marines, latest physics engine, predictable plot and general degression in the gaming market.

I got Audiosurf of steam last friday and managed to get over 16 hours of game time on it already, a highly fun and addictive little game (if you have a music library to match) And something completely different from anything else I've ever played.
