I just finished watching Elfen Lied and I personally thought it was amazing. I loved the story, the characters, pretty much everything about it. I was wondering if my fellow Escapists knew of any other animes that are somewhat like this. I enjoy watching something that makes me feel a bit of emotion.(Elfen Lied made me cry like a baby.)

Here is a few with a short summary.

Welcome to the NHK - A social recluse learns to deal with the realities of society.

Darker than Black - A single sentance cannot express what this is about, know only that it is an amazing mystery/action type that has good characters and should make you feel something.

Clannad - What seems to be a typical High School Romance anime is actually something far deeper, and will almost undoubtedly make you cry like a baby.

Gurren Lagann - The most awesome piece of awesome ever. It has robots, and a man far too manly for this world.

Beck - Shinji Ikari joins a rock band. Actually not quite, its just a good story with solid characters and an amazing soundtrack.

High School of the Dead and School Days are garbage. Serious don't even touch the stuff.

The Stuff that Sark listed are all good. If you're looking for something thats similar to Elfen Lied specifically, then I might recommend Blood+

"Blood+ and Elfen Lied deal with the definition of what it means to be human and humane. In both cases, a super-evolved species represented by an apparently frail female lead, presents a menace to mankind. Yet humanity is to be blamed for much of the violence that follows. While EL is occasionally borderline ecchi and Blood+ maintains a very serious tone through and through, both series are emotionally-moving exercises that allow emotional bonds to be forged, despite the deeply violent world-scape they present."

High School of the Dead - Zombie anime, pure ecchi, 100% kickass.
Higurashi - Sort of an insane killer anime - if you like EL you'll like this.
Outlaw Star - Imagine taking the original Star Wars series and pumping it full of sugar-infused LSD. It is that awesome.
Cowby Bebop - Another space anime, personally I think Outlaw Star is better, but A LOT of people love this anime.
