Of course, the same argument made for Samus Aran could be made for Gordon Freeman.
That was the point that I was trying to make about a character in power armor.

Hell, I just recently started a NWN2 game with a female lead character for no reason to see how the differences are playing out. Quite entertaining, really. You should try it if you like RPGs.

I just lol'ed so hard when MALES say 'Oh I get annoyed when I see boobs everywhere in video games'...
No, no you fucking do not, if you do, you have no testicles.
As has been said, the day I see the a male lead character who doesn't have rippling muscles, a strong jaw line etc. THEN female gamers can complain, 'till then, just try avoiding said games? It's not like they're in most of the top games anyway, I didn't see any boobs in CoD, and Zoe was perfectly well dressed in L4D...

Um, I rather resent that remark since, typically speaking, if I want to see boobs, I'll go check out real ones rather then some pixilated crap.

Story, on the other hand, is something else entirely.

I'm degraded and slightly depressed to say that me and my mates get our arses whooped by the other team almost all of the time when the opposite teams best player is a girl.

I didn't say that... but I guarantee you wouldn't complain when you see boobs in a game.

And why does that make you degraded or depressed?

To quote myself...

To look again at the RPG genre, is a woman wearing a chainmail bikini and getting just as much protection from it as the man who has to wear full plate armor, including helmet and shield? Someone COULD argue that the idea behind a mage walking around id some fairly skimpy cloth that can barely be considered clothing could be argued towards practicality rather then simply selling sex.
While I don't complain about such rediculous crap as a chainmail bikini, I can, and do, make fun of such things on a very regular basis

I tried to read through every page, but after some "shut the **** up" and "so don't play it" comments, it seems best for my health to just skip it all.

Results of a male driven culture. It's annoying that all female gamers get is either:

1. slutty girl
2. huge *****
3. overly tough woman with no personality
4. huge wimp

One of the four is usually what every female character in gaming amounts too. It gets old, like all woman have these really extreme personalities and no movement in between, while male characters can have an array of personalities--especially on the RPG scene.

Anymore I just roll my eyes and ignore it.
I agree with everything up to the point of the rolling of eyes.

It's just that ignoring the problem will not make it go away. Actually, it will contribute to make it endure and grow.

I'm a guy who is very much into women, but to witness Samus Aran survive and single handedly defeat an entire army of alien bio-smugglers to come in the end of it all wearing a bikini or unbelievably tight suits does not appease to my sexual whims at all.

It just pisses me off, because I was led to believe she made enough money being a bounty hunter to not need to pose for men's magazines and stuff. I can't get over how ridiculous that portrayal of her is.

Living in very male-centric country, I get to hear a lot of comments, in far more than just the subject of videogames, about how women are only supposed to do this and that and not do that other thing there or whatever.

It's like the whole of jokes about woman driving, where statatiscally speaking, it's far more likely for men to have accidents.

Guys can be real idiots if nothing more because society made it confortable for us to be that way. So obviously most of us (them) will see absolutely no problem with undignified portrayal of women in videogames.

Although a women in bikini could perfectbly be portrayed in a naturalistic way, you'd be hard pressed to find such an example in videogame, really.

I'm a guy, but I hope you don't mind me commenting anyway. Frankly it shocks me that not so much how women are presented, not just in video games, but in the media in general, but how many women seem to just tolerate it and often even encourage encourage it. It just blows my mind. So I find this tread rather refreshing really; and as for the portrayal in video games, you're right, it's crazy. I don't even get why anyone would find that attractive in the first place.
You should probably go into more detail. "I don't even get why anyone would find that attractive in the first place." There are so many things this could mean.
Are you gay?
Do you not like skinny women?
Do you not like women with big breasts?
I like a lot of the women in video games, not necessarily the ones with huge tits, and the problem is being VERY overblown here.
Also: Don't complain about DOA, all it was meant to be was jackoff material for guys and really shouldn't apply here, unless you're going to start complaining about softcore porn being disgraceful to women, too.
Right, sorry forgot to clarify. I was referring to the humongous breast thing. I fail to understand how extra-large breasts can be attractive. I like natural-looking baseball sized ones myself. ...maybe softball sized... but anything bigger than that is a waste. Also the brainless blond ditz "Britney Spears" persona is not very attractive either, see X-Blades.
And since you brought is up yes I do think the porn industry is very degrading to women, but to rant on that would be equatable to trying to tear down a brick wall with a toothpick.

I admit I like playing games that feature attractive men, and I understand why having a "hot" female character is beneficial for sales.

As such, I don't find extremely attractive or scantily clad females in games horribly offensive (most of the time I think their armor/outfits are kind of awesome and agree that they are attractive). What I don't like is when said females are depicted as having a 22" waist with a 58" bust line. It's possible to make hot female characters with feasible bodies, as many games out there demonstrate; it's the ones that push feasibility completely out the window that bother me (example: Ivy from Soul Calibur IV).

I don't find ridiculous proportions attractive in male characters, either (Marcus Fenix). It seems like a similar argument could be made in how men are often depicted having a severely muscled, chiseled body (and are often hot), which in reality opposes the majority of the male gender.
Twisted Shadows for the win

Before pointing the finger at video games, maybe you should look at shit like magazines and see where this culture's coming from.

I've never been bothered by it. This shit is in all forms of media, so it's not quite right to single out gaming, which is still a relatively new industry. And as others have pointed out, it's not like men have it much better, it's just that men handle it differently than women. People are starting to complain a bit more and things are slowly changing, but the fact that sex sells so well is not something that will go away soon.

If you're worried about girls thinking they need to look like Lara Croft, I'd be more concerned with the fact that girls are looking up to a video game character instead of, you know, an actual human being.

Um... considering the fact that a pissed off woman with a gun is generally more threatening then a buff guy with the same gun...

Let's take a fantasy setting. You've got a huge ass guy wearing little to no armor and swinging what appears to be a tree with a stupidly large blade attatched to the end of it or a hot chick in little to nothing carrying a staff for target choices.

Which do you kill first?
