I dont know what the big issue is with girls playing computer games. I have played games since I was 6 Ive owned nearly every console although atm Im mostly into PC gaming. Im enjoying WoW where Im considered one of the best healers (I play a troll priest) by most people who play with me.

I also love Left for Dead (I MUST be Zoey!) atm and im really looking forward to Resi 5 as im a big fan of the series and Wesker ;)

You guys think you have some sort of dominance when it comes to gaming whereas I mostly think its because women find it harder to access. Plastering naked girls over the front of gaming mags and websites doesnt help :/

Even my mum loves playing on my wii and shes over 55. Also my sister is better at gaming than even me although she doesnt have as much time, she steals my nephews DS I bought him for his birthday (arent I the best aunty ever?)
:)

I don't mean "rare" like the Desert Tortoise or anything. When I say "rare" I'm comparing you to the endless hoards of male gamers. Even more rare are the female gamers who play more than casual games.

The planets don't have to be aligned to find another female playing Call of Duty, but I'll be damned if we run across one more than twice a month.

I love gaming, when I was about 11 I never thought I would say that, I was always complaining to my brother 'cos he was always on the Xbox. One day he wanted to go multi player on Halo 2 so he shoved a controller in my hand and made me play.
5 years later here I am going strong and kicking his ass. Of course my horizons have expanded, I love FPSs as they were the thing that got me going but I'd give anything a go.

Btw some gamers wont let on they are girls I have been kicked off a few random LFD games before when people have suspected im a girl at the start they didnt even give me a chance to shoot Bill by accident :( (he should stop wearing green!)... yay for equality huh :S I also know there is hardcore guilds in WOW that wont take girls becuase we apprently cause 'drama'. Also lets not forget the whole OMFG YOUR A GURL PIC PLOX attitude -.- So I wouldnt take you percieved girl gamer ratio as accurate. Crouching gamer Hidden girl!

People say girl gamers aren't rare nowadays, but I don't meet many other girls that play games ('real' games) outside the internet...

Guys make better friends anyway, when they aren't being silly manchildren.

Wow, people still fawn over female gamers...
You know, I really can't figure out which is sadder.
The fact that some of the members of The Escapist are prone to falling into this position of awe, or that the mass gaming community is just now starting to figure this out.

Most of my female friends are live-action roleplayers or pen-and-paper roleplayers, and most of them will at least try video games. Over half are pretty dedicated, but varied in interests: a couple play WoW, one is an anime fangirl big into JRPGs, most will play Rock Band or SingStar when we have a house party. Even with my female friends who I wouldn't consider dedicated gamers, most still occasionally screw around with a Wii or online casual flash game.

On the other hand, pretty much all my female relatives (and maybe half the male) consider video games to be an immature boys-only thing, and just can't accept how many women I know who play. But, I'm the only real geek in the family, so it's not surprising.

Wait. Wait. Since when is Rockband and Guitar hero NOT casual games? I'd say those are prime examples.

Anyway, get over it. So females play games now. They've done it for a number of years, there's not big deal. Realise that there's people, and some people like to play games, and some people don't like to play games. It's nothing more than that.

My wife and I play together. There doesn't seem to be alot of 2 player co-op games for the 360. She plays RPG's mostly, we've put alot of hours into Puzzle Quest and Oblivion. I'm trying to get her more comfortable with FPS's. She wants to play games like Halo and CoD4 but doesn't want to get eaten alive by better players. I think Fallout 3 is helping her develope the hand eye co-ordination and reflexs required to play FPS's.

One of the fastest growing demographics are older female gamers. My mom and sister sat down and played Portal for a few hours one night. I've never seen my mom play a game since our Atari 2600.

It's been my experience that woman tend to perfer puzzle games, platformers, mmorpgs, social games like the sims or second life. That's not to say those are the only games they play. I know some world class female Halo and Counter Strike players.

Guys tend to play FPS's, mmorpgs, RTS's... Pretty much anything with swords, guns, explosions.

I think that's the reason guys don't see so many girls in games. We just perfer different things.

tenny20ca... could you stereotype anymore :S

FPS's, mmorpgs, RTS's... Pretty much anything with swords, guns, explosions ...pretty much covers my fave games :/ My sister is OCD so she will play puzzle games obsessivly( after cleaning the house until her knuckles are red) but that aside *cough*

Just stop seperating us female gamers out we arent aliens! We also dont appreiciate this animosity (see Mercenary57's post above) we get from guys who game who dont have the OMFG A GURL complex. Its like we arent taken seriously becuase we must be using our femininity to get ahead in games? wut?

We just want to be treated the same as everyone else we dont WANT people to 'fawn' over us we DONT think we are 'special' so just let us play and have fun k!

Met them, dated them & played with them.

I used to study at a big geek Uni and dated a couple of gamers there.

These days I meet them at parties every so often.

c. becomes a complete douchebag and dedicates the entire game to shit talk, team killing, and other forms of douchebaggery. <--- you wouldn't believe how common this type is.
I'm not sure that's due to there being a girl around, dude ;)

Kanada If you thought your were badly bullied for liking games as a boy try being a girl in the same situation :p

I dont boast in fact its somthing I get told off about by my friends when we beat an egomaniacal friend of mine that I dont rub his face in it. This is becuase hes a very good player and ill admit I become very very nervous when I play against him even though hes never rubbed my face in it althought he doesnT spare my team. Its all for fun tho :)

I dont really agree with seperate games for girls I enjoy them as they are. As for lara croft she is one of my favourite heroines although I think the psychology of her never having a romantic partner is obviously in favour of men. She is a strong rolemodel for girls today as is Claire Redfield and others.

The naked girls I was referring to is rl models posing on the front of gaming magazines for no reason and porn pics/ adult dating sites spread over some gaming websites. It makes women feel unwelcome and almost threatened at least from my point of view maybe im being prematurely old fashioned.
