They play games, so that's what makes them a gamer. I find it irritating as hell when someone deems another person "not a gamer" just because of the way they do/don't act/dress/post on their walls.
Yeah, there's been a lot of "nerd rage" lately at being a nerd becoming "mainstream." And the reaction is hilariously ironic, because all of these "true nerds" self-identify as social outcasts, and by reacting so negatively against this new wave of nerds they are essentially creating outcasts, as well. People who aren't even accepted into the realm of nerds. Imagine that--outcasts that even the outcasts won't accept. Hell, if that's the case, they're probably better nerds than those supposed "pure bloods."
And for the OP...yeah, a "gamer" probably had a signature "look" for a long time, but now lots of people are "gamers" and there are many new ways to play games, so not every "gamer" is going to look the same. And as it should be. It's that "exclusive club" mentality that's lead to all sorts of corrosive kinds of elitism in the gaming and nerd culture, and frankly it's not doing anybody any favors. Not that I'm saying you're being elitist, but things aren't as black-and-white as they used to be.
Also, on the messy room thing, that's sort of inherent to most college students, male or female. Just because we females typically have higher standards for how we look and smell than men doesn't mean we're any more organized.
