So I've been wondering about other peoples opinion on this subject. What do you guys think about sexual fetishes? Why do you think people have them? And finally, what experiences have you had with fetishes or fetishists? Personally I don't have much of an opinion on the subject, but I'm curious about the wider consensus.

I had a girlfriend with a rather strange sexual fetish. Needless to say, it was probally one of the reasons we split.

Fetishes are just another way of saying "not everyone likes the same thing."
Because mainstream culture only accepts a tiny, narrow description of what is sexy or sexual, everything that doesn't fit that mold is labeled as being some odd niche and the people that enjoy it are "weirdos" and "perverts."
Yup, I'd say that's accurate.

I sort-of agree, but one could also argue that the purpose of sex is to reproduce and that fetishes contribute nothing to this process. Im mostly playing devil's advocate here by the way.

When does "sexy" become "fetish" anyway?
Are stockings or sexy underwear already a fetish? What about boots? Where's the border?

Well, this ain't very PG lads, but she had a thing for bondage.

I'm not exactly the guy that wants to be whiped or chained up with gimp mask on.

Whatever people do behind closed doors is fine as long as they're both adults and it's all consensual. The only experience that ever happened to me was finding out that a former friend is a furry. I probably should have known, but it still took me by surprise to find out she made furry porn of herself.

And while we're at it, let's get rid of the gays, and jews as well.

That sentence was in satire for you not so bright types

Everyone likes different things, like did you know liking breasts is a fetish? Or arse? Or legs? They aren't as severe as say, people who find 2 girls 1 cup attractive, but they're still fetishes.

No, that's the purpose of ejaculation and the reproductive system. The actual physical act of sexual intercourse can be a means unto itself, but if you're going to bring up sex without pregnancy as "contributing nothing," then you've got a rather large chunk of humanity that are also "contributing nothing" having sex that falls within society's accepted spectrum. You can also have a fetish for something that's not even directly sexual, like ears or feet or non-genital body piercings.
Then whose to say that those "other things" you refer to are not also fetishes, just not considered so by society as a whole? And while fetishes may not be "directtly sexual" the resultant feeling is in fact sexual.

Like I said, devil's advocate.

It's the freudian need to be different expressing itself sexually.

I remember reading that somewhere. It might have been on the Escapist now that I think of it...

A fetish is a particular obsession with a specific thing in a sexual way i.e. leather, furries, etc.
Having said that, I have no fetishes, but hell, if it makes you happy you go right ahead (assuming it's not pedophilia, in which case its not a fetish, your just a freak and should be shot).
Having said THAT, some fetishes are just...bad. For instance, poop. Poop is bad. Oh so bad...

I have to admit i think its a bit of a lie if anyone says they have no fetishes at all, its just, most people seem to hide them from their partners and not say anything. I mean, my last girlfriend was into a bit of pain (not much, biting but never drawing blood, wax, stuff like that). It definitely makes things more fun to explore.
