Chapter 1: A Wary Meeting

A single, solitary person stands beneath the Fourth Street Bridge. Not a sound disturbs the one a.m. starless gloom, no cars have gone past for nearly an hour, which is almost how long the poor soul has been waiting. Not another being in sight. All is quiet except the usual nighttime noise fare.

Damnit to Hell, he said midnight!

Never mind the fact that it's FUCKING COLD! Add to that the fact that this person didn't exactly bundle up, wasn't expecting to be kept waiting so long. Geez, he said he might be a little late, but this is ridiculous! Gradually growing more impatient, they take out a hard-pack and light up a cigarette.

This dick has till I finish this....

Almost as if on cue, footsteps suddenly ring out on the sidewalk out to the right, coming down from a street intersecting the end of the bridge. After a moment, a singularly disgusting human being fades into view out of the relative darkness. Small, stooped, withered, and loosely draped in rotting tatters, this guy smells like not only a really low quality bar, but the unkempt and overused bathroom of one as well. He seems to actually radiate a scent made by his very skin, the odors of countless kinds of cheap booze mixed with the smells of every kind of excrement and a mouth fully ravaged by gingivitis. His thin hair falls in greasy curtains about his pockmarked and wrinkled face, his scalp, fully visible beneath the hair, is pale and riddled here and there with liver spots. He grins crookedly at his odor-victim, revealing less than half a normal mouthful of teeth (each one shriveled looking and black) and blackened gums.

"You came. Got a smoke?"

Without another word, and without waiting so much as a second to wait for a response, the man turns and walks away, only looking back to see if the person is following or not once.

This is a progressively developing RP, as you know from the title. That, obviously, means the story, cast, all that good stuff changes and grows as we go along. Each player who posts should find a niche in the situation as it stands, and insert yourself into it. Don't just post just to feel included, put some thought into it. A player can dedicate themselves to a major role or, just be a bit part. The first person to respond should be the person who was waiting under the bridge. You make the decisions, whether or not you follow him, do you give him a smoke, do you call out to him to wait then berate him for being so late, etc.

1) Don't bother with character sheets, I don't want to break the flow. Deliver your character in context, as it is necessary to the story.

2)I will periodically post a list of players that have shown up so far, along with a basic description of their character. I will also try to post a brief synopsis occasionally.

3) Be descriptive, but not long-winded. We're looking for a few paragraphs per post. We don't want reading it to become a daunting task.

4) I'm intending this to be kind of a modern fantasy RP, but let's not go overboard with the supernatural stuff.

5) If you get ninja'd, just accept it, and edit your post accordingly.

6) PLEASE dont post with a character that's supposed to have a major role if you're not CERTAIN you're gonna stick with it. I've seen that a million times, it ruins everything. Not fair to people who actually want to do it and have fun with it.

7) ONE CHARACTER PER PLAYER. If you want a different role, then kill off or otherwise expend your first.

Now, then. For the length of your post, you are the GM. I will be playing the gross guy, my role will still be as GM, but in a looser sense. You, the player, direct the story, with a little extra steering from me. Now, let's have fun, and take this somewhere big.

Jack grimaced at the sight of the man who appeared out of the darkness. His stench, thankfully, was less offending to Jack's nose thanks to the burning cigarette; but there was nothing to protect his eyes from the view of the horrific man. With his stomach already churned, Jack was tempted to end this meeting here, doubts clouding his mind as to what the ugly man had to offer. However, he had already accepted the invitation, and he had no clue what might happen if he was to get this far and suddenly turn it all down.

Plus, there were other disincentives, he wasn't going to be able to get a taxi at this late hour, and a walk home in this weather was out of the question. Even with Jack's heavy coat and thick jeans, he'd catch his death. So, after taking a second to brush some dirt out of his unruly black hair, Jack walked after the man. "If you wanted a smoke, you should have been on time." Jack knew it was a little petty to withhold a simple cigarette for such tardiness, but it did help him feel a bit warmer on the inside to jab back at the man who made him freeze his ass out here.

After a short jog to get behind the man, which Jack regretted after catching another whiff of the man's grotesque aroma, the pair walked in silence for a short distance. They weaved through alleyways and narrow, empty streets for at least ten minutes before Jack decided to milk the time for what it was worth. "Now, perhaps you can enlighten me to all this subterfuge? I find letters and emails scattered about my home, office, and places I frequent, all speaking in either riddles or tongues. All of them saying some nonsense about 'something yet unseen', yet fail to explain anything. Then, I get led down into the worst pits of the city, questioning the worst kinds of people. All of them pointing to yet another person, who points me to another person, again and again, until I finally get a hold of you. Even then, when I finally get to someone who I think can actually answer my questions, you ask me to wait under a bridge during what is probably the coldest night on record." Jack felt like he was being ignored as he listed off the strange chain of events that led him here, and as he did so, he could see that at any point he probably could have just walked away from it all. Yet, for some reason he couldn't think of, even in retrospect, he didn't.

Lost in thought, Jack's surroundings began to pass by like a blur, paying little attention as to where the short man was leading him. It had to be sometime later before Jack snapped back to attention and tried again to get a response from the man. "Am I even going to get answers this time? Or am I simply being strung further down the rabbit hole?"

"The rabbit hole?!" He cackled in a wheezing sort of way. "Why, tha's the point, aint it?"

He grinned toothily side-long at his companion. Finding no look of amusement forthcoming in response, he looked back ahead.

"I waited to answer your questions cuz this is it," he said, cutting across the sidewalk towards a bar. "And don't worry about being strung along. You're not far, now, from your purpose in this," He added, holding the door open for Jack.

"Oh, God..." rang out a voice of dread from behind the bar as the pair walked in. It was muttered, though, and the little whithered walking stick seemed not to notice. "Usual tonight, Old Man?"

"Nah, just a beer. Anybody waiting for me?"

"Front corner booth, the barkeep said, pointing.

"Thanks. Come on," he added to Jack, and they made their way over to a small gathering around a booth in one of the brighter lit and less crowded corners of the dive...

Jack sighed as he saw he was getting somewhere, but very slowly. The man spoke with the same kind of obscurity as all the letters Jack read, and all the people he spoke to. The intrigue was interesting when Jack started the journey, but now it felt like he was in the middle of a bad movie, a climax, let alone the end, was no where in sight.

Silently, Jack sat at the booth, snuffing out his cigarette in a nearby ashtray. He was tempted to pull out another to cope with the smell of the Old Man, but he chose to simply suffer through it. He was trying to quit after all.

As a moment of silence hung in the air, Jack shot a couple glances at the people in the booth. They all seemed to vary in looks, with none seemingly to be as gross as his escort. Regardless of their appearance, Jack could feel the mood around the table was...strange, almost esoteric, if one could call that a mood. The queerness of it all puzzled him, and Jack couldn't find the right words to say. So, he remained quiet, hoping someone else would start the inevitable and give him a grasp of the situation.

At the booth, the small group seemed to be paying close attention to a man who looked out of place in the dive of a bar.

He was wearing a maroon button-up shirt with a black tie and clean looking dark blue-jeans. His slicked back, dark brown hair was just visible under the brim of his black felt fedora with a short brim.

He was shuffling a deck of cards and then handed the deck to one of the people at the table. They pulled out a random card, a 6 of hearts, and put it in their pocket. Then, the man with the fedora re-shuffled the deck and swept the cards across the table in an arc. He piked up the last card and showed it to the crowd, It was the 6 of hearts. They responded with "aaahhh"s and "ooo"s of varing volume.

For the finally, the man who was now apparently some kind of magician, somehow levitated the card out of his palm, before snatching it out of the air. And when he showed it to the crowd again, it had become the Ace of diamonds.

There were a few quiet applause, but then the magician noticed Jack and the dirty man approaching the booth.

"That's all for now I'm afraid." The magician said to the group. "If you'll please excuse me, I have some business to attend to."

With that, the group dispersed and Jack and the Old Man were able to sit down.

"So, what he hell am I here for?" he asked the two men before they could speak.

- of the situation, Viking. Good to see you around the forums again.

"Both of you, for some reason or another, have been led down a winding path full of twists and turns and dead ends for one simple reason," came the response, his breath making both men wish he weren't talking. "Where the final destination of this little journey of ours lies, I can't say, but my destination, and by proxy, yours, at the moment, is known as the Black Shard. That is what is yet unseen," he added, nodding to Jack.

At that moment, a waitress approached the table with Jack's beer (a glass bottle Samuel Adams winter lager), an incredibly pretty girl who smiled kindly and fondly at the reeking relic as she set it and a Newport non-menthol down before him and said, "Anything for you gentlemen? It's on the house, any friend of Old Man drinks free here. Just don't take advantage."

The magician lifted his hat and ran his hand through his hair, before setting his hat back on his head.

Based on what the Old Man said, the guy who came with him was in the same boat. But he couldn't help wondering what he and the other man had to do with one-another.

"I'll have another scotch straight up." He said to the waitress.

"You can call me Aiber." He said to his fellow stooge.

As he spoke he was slowly and casually flipping a gold coin between his fingers. Despite his unease, he made sure that everything about his body language was calm and casual.

Even with his smooth attitude and groomed appearance, something about "Aiber" made him seem just as subtly out of place as everyone else in the bar.

-for the compliment. It's good to see you again as well. It's been a while but it looks like you're coming back strong. Also, when you say you want it to be a modern fantasy, but not go overboard, I'm not sure what you mean. My best guess is that you are okay with Lovecraftian cults and 'dark arts' stuff, but not wizards shooting lighting from their fingers. Is that about right?

Jack nodded to Aiber in acknowledgement, then gestured to himself when he responded. "Jack. As for the drink, I'll pass for now."

He waited for the waitress to depart before he spoke again. "Ok, now what is the Black Shard, and why is it unseen? Is it outside the city? Or simply tucked away someplace where few would consider looking?" Jack remembered his search for answers led him down several strange corridors into parts of the city he doubted he would've found on a map. The thought of such an underworld made him a bit nervous. Without really thinking, Jack stretched his hand into one of his coat pockets and began to fiddle with a small object, using it to distract his nerves.

At the bar itself, sat a man just at the start of his middle years, brown hair just graying at the temples, a pyramid of shot glasses in front of him and a round based, square glass of vodka four fingers deep in his hands. Dressed in a pale gray suit, his tie, a garish forest green and sunset yellow striped thing, lay on the ground beneath his barstool, and a matching gray silk shirt adorned with at least one drink completed his attire.

He stood and, somewhat shakily, made his way over to the table the others sat at. He brushed past Aiber and threw an arm around Jack's shoulders, before noisily taking a sip of the alcohol in hands and speaking,"Ya know? I been coming 'ere fer almos fiftee years,"He pointed over to a corner where there sat a speaker and a wall holding pictures of various individuals,"Met the las woman I slept wit righ over the'e,"He twisted around, and pointed under a ceiling lamp, the ceramic broken and obviously repaired long ago,"And I boke my head on tha', in my first drinkin' aciden."

He drained the contents of the glass then and plopped down opposite Old Man, the glass, and the hand attached to it, sounding loudly on the wooden table,"But I neve' seen eithe of you in here before,"He raised an accusatory finger at Aiber and Jack,"So wassits are you doing here? Name'is Ricky Collabert, nice to meet you,"He leaned back in his chair, glass still firmly in his grip, and just kept going backwards until he hit the floor with a great *CRAAAASSSHH.

"I'm alright, I'm alright. Trus'me, I'm a doctor!"

Aiber, who was quite accustomed to drunkards, simply rolled his eyes and looked at the Old Man.

"Well, I won't waist time asking who you are or why you want me and Jack, so do you have anything else to tell us before we go?"

He was hoping to get more on the Black Shard before he and Jack left. Suddenly he realized he didn't know a thing about Jack or this Old Man. He had followed the clues and letters on a whim, figuring it would at least be interesting. But he was beginning to realize this could mean more than he thought.

"The problem is, nobody knows. No one knows where or what it is. I've been onto it for years and I think I'm getting close, but I'll need help. For my part, the best I can think of, it is a talisman, or perhaps a totem. I do know that it posesses great power over the elements of fire and shadow. I also know that if anyone tries to use it, it will prove quite disastrous. All the old legends I've tracked down about it end the same: ruin. For a great multitude of victims, and then the wielder."

yeah, you got it. I just don't want Force Unleashed or Forgotten Realms scale stuff, don't want people to have all these extreme powers.

Jack was caught off guard by the suddenly appearing Ricky, not able to respond when the drunkard fell to the floor. An awkward silence hung in the air until Jack just decided to act like it didn't just happen, even though he couldn't resist shooting odd glances at the supposed doctor.

"Wait minute, if it's disastrous for anyone to use it, then why are we looking for it?" Jack remembered the phrase the man used, "power over the elements of fire and shadow"...did that mean it could control them? Jack wasn't quite sure, but asking direct questions about something so little is known about seemed counter-productive, so he focused on the risk part. "Wouldn't we just be sharing in the fate of the other victims?"

"My purpose is to find and protect it, not use it. Ultimately, I prefer to destroy it, but that doesn't seem possible."
