Check it out, the new Final fantasy MMORPG has been getting terrible reviews
This is Gamespot's review, they gave it a 4.0

* Absolutely miserable interface
* Does a poor job of communicating important information
* Limited questing means you're always looking for something fun to do
* Everything about the economy stinks
* Every aspect of the game is filled with dumb obstacles.

Gametrailers gave it a 4.2

Oh Yeah? Let's see it's Metacritic!

At the time of writing It needs one more review it order for it to get a metascore but two critics have given it 84/100 which is not to be ashamed of. The other review is the Gamespot variety. User Score is 4.3 but I call them lies and don't care for them because most users on these kind of things are morons.

Yeah, this might be worse off than APB. Thank God Square Enix is a massive company.

Calumon: Yeah, we still need our Kingdom Hearts 3!

Probably in a day or 2 when all major critics do their review we'll have a real score. Still it looks like a mess.

later the FNC games are on the bottom of the 'to do' lists.

Honestly what did people expect from a game that's only been in development for like a year, created under the whims of Japanese Kotick

We can't recommend that you spend $50, and then $12.99 a month after the first 30 days, on a title that has as many flaws as FFXIV does. But we can recommend that you keep an eye on the news to see how this game evolves.
And they gave it an 84. How do they say the game is crap and needs massive help and then give it a good score?

Oh right, fanboys.

I don't really give a shit about Final Fantasy games after playing X-2 (I believe?) and discovering that it was crap. I understand that the others are actually good, but I already gave up on FF.

FFX was released in 2001, and in the best part of a decade since then we've had X-2, XI, XII, XIII and now XIV.

Anyone notice a pattern?

The pattern may seem like Enix and in part it may be but what is ruining Final Fantasy (the offline games) is that they are becoming more like WRPG's. I don't blame Enix for that, I blame all the WRPG fans who kept whining about JRPG's.

What is ruining FF 14 is that it is incomplete. If they had atleast provided a manual that told you what you needed to know I would have been happy but the information is nowhere to be found in game, even online information is scarce!
XIII is the complete opposite of a WRPG, and it's the worst modern offline FF to date.

Not where combat is concerned. The main complaints about the combat are:

1) Only control one character

2) Auto-Battle all the way through

Sound like a JRPG or a WRPG to you?

The linear nature of the game isn't exactly fitting of a JRPG either since up until the PS2 era, JRPG's almost always had a world map to explore. Still, I will agree that the linearity is more JRPG than WRPG.

When the game did open up we got....QUESTS...wonder where that came from? Quests are pretty new to JRPG's, they are normal and required for WRPG's though.
How in the hell does that sound like WRPG combat? What WRPG is like that? Oblivion (no) ME (nope) The Witcher (no) DA:O (no) FO3 (no) V:TMB (no) KOTOR (nope).

You know what FF13 combat is like? It's like traditional JRPG turn based combat system mushed together with Tales series JRPG combat in a system that combines the worst of both instead of the best of both. It is obviously heavily JRPG inspired but badly designed.

And don't forget about comparing it with other hallmark WRPG features like character customization (very limited) dialogue choices (none) and story choices (none). And of course it heavily uses JRPG character and dialogue tropes and heavily uses JRPG storytelling through long cutscenes. And of course as you yourself notice the world is not just more linear than the WRPG style, it's more linear than classic JRPGs like FF7. It's more "JRPG" style than the classic JRPGs.

This is probably the biggest problem - and it's not like WRPGs are really better. Oblivion seems impressive at first but then you realise that the dialogue assignment is crap and it can't handle the type of breadth it aspires to. The AI is also borked in that when you steal something a guard who has never met you before in a completely different city will realise this and confront you, so there's an entire element of the game that doesn't work. I'd rather a linear game that knows it's linnear than a sandbox game that breaks.
