Welp, I hope I'm wrong about this, and I hope that they DO improve on some of the more dated mechanics. Seriously, as cool as the Materia system was, the fact that everyone could be any role at any time (up to and including stuff like Enemy Skills, stealing, etc) just made it so that there was no reason not to just take 3 characters you liked and just never ever change them.

As opposed to having a character you dont like but not being able to change them because they are your healer? If we wanted to get down to it having fixed classes is more dated but both can work well. FFVII is integrated around the materia system though if they changed that it would be a huge deal. Characters like Cloud are more suited to attack and Aeris is more inclined toward magic but if you wanna change it up then you can.

I would say Cloud was not an Emo in this game in others he has been because they cant seem to decide on how he should act after 7 but in 7 he was much more cocky and self assured at least at the start he goes to pieces when its revealed almost his entire memory is a lie but I think thats fair and believable. Course anytime someone shows a bit of depression in game people are always quick to say Emo.

It wasn't the stuff after he regained his memory I was thinking of; I was referring to Cloud repeatedly telling everyone how he totally doesn't care about anything all the time throughout the first half of the game. He'd be a nightmare to have a pint with.

Yeah but I wouldnt call his attitude Emo remember hes just a mercenary at the start hes not interested in politics or saving the planet initially. Hes not moping around and crying about how the world hates him hes just acting cocky and indifferent and hes certainly not devoid of emotion or uncaring toward people if anything hes a little proud of his abilities and pretty damn confident in himself.

Now look at Kingdom hearts Cloud that is Emo Cloud and the one in Dissidia well I dunno what he was there something different again its like they ignore the FF7 arc existed and how he resolved.

Then again I think Emo has lost a lot of its meaning isnt it really something to do with melodramatic music and be closer to goth rather than a term to describe narcisstic depressed people?

Getting off topic anyway. Someone brought up what I thought was a good point in another forum and I hope Square Enix dont do it but its possible and that is the extended lore they built up around FF7. Personally I hope they ignore it, before and after and just stick to what was in that game originally. I dont want Genesis to be brought up for instance or worse be in the game.

Actually, my plan would be to give each character character specific piece of materia that is 100% exclusive to them that is-perma attached, that either gave a unique command or provided a specific passive effect, and then make some of the Command Materia skills be exclusive to certain people.

Example:
Aeris: Cure-Boost - Healing materia attached to this materia gains 50% effectiveness
Yuffie: Steal Command (Hers is the only one in the game)
Nanaki (I refuse to call him Red 13, his name is nanaki, modsbannit): Magic-Attack - Normal attacks are imbued with the status effect or element of materia attached to this materia.
Barret: Cover Command
Cait-Sith: Enemy Skill (the only one in the game too, so you finally have a reason to use him, because enemy skills are the shit!)
Cloud: Lightning boost - All Thunder element materia (inlcuding summons) attached to this materia gain 50% effectiveness.

That kind of thing. Basically, you can still customize you characters to fill lots of roles, but some characters are the only ones who can do certain specific things, and some are slightly better than others at certain things too.

Then again, I'm a fan of the Etrian Odyssey school of RPG, where combat is all about "what can your characters do? What party/skill composition is the best for cracking this particular boss?". :s At least, that's how I design my own RPGs.

But I'm worried, I don't think Square Enix is in a healthy place to do this. I wish they could wait and see what how their next game is received before they implement that fighting style. This will likely just end up being a hack and slash game otherwise. Which may save the series, to be honest. Not sure how else they'd deliver a AAA modern title.

I don't see anything anywhere that says FF7 is going to take after FF15's battle system, or that the remake is going to turn into a hack and slash game...

They put so much money into updating the graphics, why do you think they wouldn't also update the fighting mechanics that have died away too (in popularity, anyways, I still tolerate/like them)? They've basically spent the last decade trying to develop their fighting mechanics and they've basically come to real-time action mechanics.

That really isn't a bad thing and is probably the future of all RPGs seeing as it really is the present too. But I'm concerned because they really haven't built a universally accepted fighting mechanic since the old days.

I mean, sure, I want every company to cater exclusively to my wants too. But that's not so realistic. Square Enix's goal isn't just to do fan service. This is to launch a huge AAA game that will sell like hotcakes in today's market. ATB just isn't top shelf anymore.

But you are right, they haven't developed a better alternative since then. Which again, was my original point that I do not believe that Square Enix is currently healthy enough of a company to pull this off. Graphically they're there. Story-wise it doesn't matter as much because the story was already told and their tweaks will only be to make it fit for voice acting. But gaming mechanics? Level up systems? They've gotten shittier every year for as far back as I can remember.

Is it possible that they're just going to recreate all of the assets and leave everything else in place? I guess. But I strongly doubt it.

... I may have to buy a PS4... Or not, since the announcement said play it first on PS4 not exclusively on PS4. I can wait provided it's not a GTA V kind of wait. Could just mean an Xbone port or a PC port as well. Once the price of a PS4 dips beneath the price of a new graphics card, I will think about it.

While I am skeptical of a lot of what Square does these days, I'll admit a bit of nostalgia blindness is in play for just this one. So please don't quote trying to convince me it will suck. I'll have to actually see it suck first.

However, don't take me for someone who thinks change is bad. If they seek to avoid the standard turn based battle structure for something more engaging than just spamming X til the trash mobs die, I'm all ears but they still don't need to do anything more than that for me to buy it.

The one thing that will turn me off is character reinterpretation. They currently seem to like to place Areith as this paragon of incorruptible pureness when she was actually pretty flirty and sought to deepen the love triangle between her, Cloud, and Tifa, mostly for a laugh at first. Barrett is an extremist. Granted, he's right and does have a good cause, but he does admit and accept that his actions have collateral damage.

The rest of them? I don't see them needing any softening to make them more "acceptable".

Those are new games, not remakes. It's fine for a new game to have new gameplay, but if you change the core gameplay in a remake, that's not the same game to me. That's like saying Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles is a remake of RE2.

I dont think that would happen if you would prefer that that is fine but thats not how this game operates and I dont think it would inherently be better if it did, that is more strongly pushing them into certain roles than they already are. Characters already have unique effects and abilities through things like Weapons and most importantly Limit Breaks. Later on you can make any party almost as effective as any other but earlier on especially characters are already tailored towards certain roles its just you can make them do others (less effectively) if you want. Also remember you dont have access to all the characters all the time so having something as importnat as Steal linked to Yuffie for instance would not be a good idea so I guess the effects would have to be less powerful and impressive and really then you start to get to the point of not bothering with them at all.

I am interested in combat though I would love to see them keep it the same ATB system but the characters move more on screen. Then again the actual in combat combat was not why I loved VII its functional and works but as long as they keep the materia system I would not mind if they completely revamped the fighting. I think an option between classic and new would be best.

I wonder if they will keep any of the glitches in there? I hope they fix the mag def glitch for armours but it would be cool if they kept in some well known ones like the W item glitch as a sort of nod. Then again if they didnt I would not exactly be saddened by it.

I have been waiting for this remake forever. FF7 was my favorite game growing up and to this day is one of my favorite RPG's and in fact video games ever. Having replayed the game about a year ago on steam, I am looking WAY forward to this remake.

Personally I don't want them to change anything core about the game. I want the ATB system, the materia, the birdy sex, the secret items, the super bosses, the grind, i want the exact same game. Except, I want Voice over, I want smoother animations, and obviously a whole graphical upgrade.

Honestly this should end up being the Witcher 3 of JRPG's.

My biggest worry is that this remake will only fundamentally be FF7, as new ideas, systems tweaks and other modifications will cause the game to feel completely different which isn't what I think fans want.

Personally I think the trailer looks brilliant, and just pray that the key gameplay elements - ESPECIALLY THE ATB BASED COMBAT - stay the same.

I hope they'll take cues from modern gaming and offer more choice based storylines too. So hopefully we'll getr the original story in there somewhere, but alternate versions too where more characters die, and others survive etc.

Please don't screw this one up. The Witcher 3 has my faith restore in gaming again, and RPG's as a whole seem to have found a balance again Bioware's and the previous FF clusterfucks no longer seem to matter because other companies are picking up where they left off with style. Here's to FF7 doing the same.

If the new Fallout and Uncharted were not enough, the FFVII remake is certainly the reason I will finally get a PS4. I have played the original so many times that i have lost count, and actually just started again a few weeks ago.

I bet you monies that Square Enix isn't thinking of it this way. Their goal is to sell games and they've clearly gone away from believing that ATB sells titles. Please, save this post for when we get more details on the remake.

Nah I am not buying the narrator telling a part of Midgars or that planets history the whole speech is way to self aware and sounds more like someone speaking about the ever present hope that FF7 would be getting a remake. It's been done well and does fit rather nicely with FF7's history but throughout the speech I imagined the narrator sitting there winking at me and knudging me with his elbow.

as for the remake, I am not really bothered with what they do with the game, they can keep it exactly the same and update the graphics and VO or they can completely change the game mechanics. FF7 will always hold a fond memory for me and the reason I haven't replayed the game in over a decade is because I want to retain that fond memory, after playing games like the Witcher 3 their is no way that the original FF7 is going to live up to that and I seriously doubt Square Enix has the chops to do a better reworked FF7 game... well look at how piss poor Hitman was compared to Blood Money and Contracts.

Oh it doesn't mean I won't buy it and give it a go but whatever the remake turns out like it won't cloud my memory of the one true FF7.

So they came out and assured us that we could look forward to those little quirks like the cross-dressing scene, the honey bee inn, and don corneo's mansion in the remake. Everything sounds good so far in terms of this being a very faithful remake. However we know that the dev team is not going to be anything near what the original team was, and if I remember correctly the current dev studio is one that is not really known for quality shit. Which worries me, because even if they remain faithful, if the dev half-asses it, the experience can still suck. Let's hope they don't rush it and make sure they do it right.

After all, it has been 17 years already, what's a couple more to make sure we get the game we've always wanted?

I remember seeing the PS3 FF7 tech demo the day it was released. I immediately went all over the internet to find out as much information as I could. I even joined all of the threads on Gamefaqs and checked on them regularly. However, with every passing year, my hope dwindled and eventually I just stopped following the threads and gave up.

Now, I see that my dreams have come true. FF7 is the game I spent the most time on in my life (it helped to be a teenager back then) and it was a big part of my growing up, the way my friends and I would compete with each other for the "perfect materia setup" I bought the PS One because of FF7. And I'm buying the PS4 because of FF7.

This is your big chance, Square. I've become disenfranchised with the Final Fantasy series since 13, and it had been dwindling since FF X-2. Do this game justice. Because, asides from a true Parasite Eve sequel or remake, I'm probably won't come back and just opt to replay the classics over and over again.

I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VII and it's one of the few Final Fantasy titles I've gone through more than once. As for the remake, I'm really pleased that it's in development but I would have liked more information. As overused as it is, I would have also liked to have seen the Nibelheim Burning sequence (even if it was just a couple of seconds of it). An indication as to how complete it is would have been nice as well as a release window. At the moment though, I'm not expecting Final Fantasy VII-R until 2019 or 2020. It would be nice to have it before then but I know better than to expect it this, next or even the following year.

As for what I want out of it; I really want to see The Golden Saucer expanded upon. I also really want to see more snowboarding courses and maybe even races. Adding in additional WEAPONS would be pretty awesome too. Finally, I'm kinda torn on this but, since he was such a major plot element in Crisis Core, I think it would be appropriate to incorporate G in FFVII-R. As for the combat system, I want FFXIII's system to be completely ignored. I would be perfectly happy with turn-based combat but I'm not sure how that would work outside of making the combat completely cinematic as it plays out but stopping time to input character commands.
