I recently got my greedy little hands on the english version of FFVII: crisis core for the PSP. I had my doubts, because it seemed like square was just trying to milk the franchise, because they know FFVII nuts like me will throw cash at anything that involves Sephiroth. This is not a review per-se, its a first impression. I have not completed the game yet, but I just thought I would let the people waiting for it hear a bit about the game.
First, lets start out with whats most important in an FF game, the story. I will be very careful not to spoil anything. It all starts out with a routine mission, and then it gets complicated (FFVII games do that alot huh?). The protagonist is Clouds old friend Zach. The story takes place 7 years (?) before the first FFVII. I dont want to give away details, I will let you find that out for yourselves. Rest assured though, they did justice to the Final Fantasy name. It can be verrrrrrrrry cheesy with some of the spoken dialouge, but thats something I can get past. Anyways, Ive never seen Advent children, so I finally got to hear Sephiroths english voice. The voice acting is passable, and it gets the story moving.
Now, gameplay. If youve been reading up on this game, youl get the idea is kind of an action rpg. From my experience, its a blend between a jrpg turn based system and the more wrpg real time combat. Its a bit hard to explain, but I will try. Whatever enemy your facing will be targeted, and from there you just press X to perform the action you have selected. This makes it more like a turn based kind of thing, but it feels alot like an action rpg like diablo as well. Go look up a video to see what i mean. Also, materia is back, and it works pretty much the same as last time. Limit breaks make a return, but the system for limit breaks is iffy now. In FFVII, you took damage, and your limit meter filled up. Now, Its a roulette wheel that spins around, and the whole thing is based on chance really. Also, materia levels up with roulette wheels. I would rather have seen the old systems, but whatever right? The gameplay and combat holds up just fine.
The music in the game is great. I didnt bother to check if the musician from the previous games worked here, but its pretty good. A lot of it feels like the classic FFVII music with a new techno/rockish twist. It goes well with the overall feel of the game. Also, I wanted to comment on that little sound it makes when you move your cursor on a menu or select something. You know the one. I love it.
Keep in mind, this wasnt a review, I simply want to reassure the people who are looking forward to this game that chances are, you wont be dissapointed. I am about halfway through, i think. When the official release drops, theres no doubt I am going to pay for the umd version. They deserve the money for making a quality game. Check back for a full review when I do finish up. Have fun.
